Broken Time Can Go In Many Directions is a live performance recorded in New York City on November 16, 2024. Though some of the sounds come from Unmapping the Distance Keeps Getting Closer, Honig’s 2024 album (12k1103), in the live setting he strives to push beyond the boundaries of previously composed pieces. His improvisational approach combines loops and elements from various songs – spanning multiple years – with on-the-fly arrangements, editing and effects. Viewing the recorded material as a constantly shifting body of work leaves space for serendipitous moments and leads to each set being an individualized rework, referencing and reprocessing itself as well as the song forms from which the parts emerged.

Regardless of the origin of the pieces, there is flexibility to tailor sets to the environment and mood of the moment. This set took place at Pataphysics, a series of shows at The Delight Factory, a multifaceted event space in Brooklyn. The tone of the piece reflects the space, while the sounds focus on texture, processed field recordings, heartbeat-driven rhythms, and fuzzy, interweaving melodics.

Plastic, metal, wood, and air coalesce with Rhodes, guitar, horns, piano, and other instrumental origins, creating a sound of contrast and contradiction - pairing inviting, fuzzy chords with clunky and dirty mishaps.
