Review of Hum [12k1035]

Vital Weekly (NL)

More along the lines of the recent paths chosen by 12k is Hum by Sawako. She comes from Tokyo and lives in New York and works with field recordings and computer processing. The opening piece “Pink Liquid Cotton Candy” is a very kitschy ambient/cosmic music piece, but luckily it doesn’t set the tone for the rest of the album. The six other tracks on this album are more daring and adventurous in nature, but always delicate, soft and ambient, but at the same time also more with a somewhat sharper edge. These pieces are a true joy for the ear, and the move gently down the stream. There is a femine touch to the music, but it doesn’t force itself too much, to be a true femine statement. A piano tinkles in, a guitar is strummed and calmly washes the field recordings ashore. Very nice album indeed.
