Ethereal (FR)

Between albums for the 12k label, Federico Durand remains quite active—engaging in collaborative projects and releases on other imprints—while regularly returning to the New York label for records that allow his graceful, luminous ambient sound to beautifully unfold. To compose the tracks for *La Manzana Mágica*, the Argentine artist drew inspiration from his collection of Cinderella stamps, seeking to capture the sense of wonder evoked by these tiny paper creations and the fairy tale itself (in which the apple is a gift from the heroine’s fairy godmother, capable of granting three wishes).

Using various synthesizers and cassette tapes, Federico Durand crafts tracks featuring oscillating sustained notes that seem to shimmer or evolve with delicate care. Crackles, subtle sonic manipulations, and field recordings (thunderstorms, birdsong, running water) round out a soundscape that is at times deeply moving in its graceful, minimalist combinations (such as on “Los Días se Acortan”). Delicate, almost crystalline touches also emerge (as in “God Helg 1920”), lending a more melodic quality to the music.

The connection to the fairy tale is established through the overall atmosphere—ethereal and dreamlike—as well as through track titles like “Hansel y Gretel” and “La Manzana Mágica,” and the appearance of Durand’s daughter, María Luisa, singing a nursery rhyme (“Jul 1948”). Together, these elements create a touching, cohesive work that stands as a compelling addition to the Buenos Aires-based musician’s discography.
