Review of In A Place Of Such Graceful Shapes [12k2021]

Boomkat (UK)

‘In A Place Of Such Graceful Shapes’ is the first collaboration between 12k label head Taylor Deupree and Marcus Fischer. The pair became acquainted when Marcus released the lovely ‘Monocoastal’ on Taylor’s label in 2010, and after an aborted attempt at making music together via the internet, Marcus travelled from Portland, Oregon, to New York in February of 2011 to spend four days in the 12K studio with Taylor. Inspired by the snow and bitter cold, they crafted a single 50 minute piece for the CD, a glacial expanse of frosted percussion and grey-yet-warm synth tones and crisp ambience. Eschewing computers almost entirely, the project is an exercise in human tactility and quiet, layered sonic texturing, sort of like a matchstick structure of strings, bells and harmonica held together with simple keyboard tones and deft FX. The accompanying 7″ gives each artist a chance to work individually, both contributing equally transcendent, mistily melodic works. Perfect autumnal music.
