Review of Unmapping The Distance Keeps Getting Closer [12k1103]

Anxious Magazine (PL)

Honig returns with Unmapping the Distance Keeps Getting Closer, an album of very raw, often dark and vulnerable music. Honig describes the work in terms of the feeling of listening while walking through a city and then a forest. While it may seem like a peaceful activity, there is definitely an air of unease here, created by the distorted and fragmented sounds. Piano, horns and broken rhythms create a sonic palette; however, they are not presented with clarity and clarity, but rather are suggested by the disruption and reconstruction of spectral elements. The origins of the sounds… analog, digital, acoustic, are unclear. Unmapping, remapping and unexpected.

Throughout his discography, Honig has often used field recordings as a strong narrative in his musical compositions. He uses them to evoke a sense of place, either abstractly for mood or as a deliberate, conceptual connection to the subject of the piece. Unmapping continues this tradition, but does so with a more textural and tangible theme. The place on this album is strong, but the location is unknown, and the journey is melancholic, yet somewhat hopeful, as if searching for a destination.
