Review of Shoals (Edition) [12k2017]

Record Collector (UK)

This companion piece to Deupree’s Shoals long player contains further documentation of his microscopie experiments with Javanese and Balinese gamelan. More interested in the sound of the instruments’ material surfaces than their traditional tones, he patches a series of asphyxiated creaks, subtle scrapes and reluctant chimes through audio looping software developed during his 2009 residency at the University of York’s Music Research Centre. Forgoing the more pop-oriented fixations of his recent works, Deupree scores high by hatching the tentative first steps of a molecular Martian brood. Jiggling them up for a series of fidgets, he rides them home like a piggyback from a particularly courteous poltergeist.
