Nord Modular/Modular G2
« on: February 08, 2012, 03:18:16 pm »
Hi everyone

I am reposting my original post, (pasted below) as a new topic, so we can hopefully all gain more out of the Nord Modular/Modular G2.

It seems the Nord Modulars are something of an overlooked synth sometimes for those who have them. We would think their red-ness would be enough for us to turn them on and use them more, well hopefully this thread will allow us to do just that :)

Here is my original post:

Quote
Hey all

It has been a looong time since I have posted on here, but O have come back wanting to share some Nord Modular bits that were first inspired by this forum and Taylor's and Marcus's daily creative uploads. I see the Nord page has gone? Or did I just miss it? Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Basically I have used and owned Nord's since the Rack 2 came out, and upgraded to the Nord Modular Micro years ago, until I found how the manual would constantly refer to the upgraded Modular, which was frustrating, so I upgraded again to the Nord Modular probably about 7 years ago. During that time I have used it, but never felt that I really ringed its neck and just never finding the time to really use it frequently enough to explore it. Every time I have used it I am totally amazed, it is such a great piece of kit, if not 'the' best synth I have ever owned. I am certainly a Nord fan.

Anyway, I decided to use the new year to ensure I dive into the Nord Modular further, and so am now creating a sound, experiment using just the Nord Modular every single day, with the occasional touch of EQ on a small mixer.

To do this everyday is really not easy!

Anyway, I just wanted to post it here, as it would be great for some Nord fans alike to enjoy, and also as it was also here, that gave me the idea (well my partner the idea).

I intend on coming back here more to chat.

Thanks everyone.

Martin

spent some time going through the sounds,, really amazing stuff! particularly like some of the noise/texture you're getting in there... sounds very organic.

related to puggo's post in the other thread... i'm interested in building a DX7 in the G2... though i'm sure one already exists.

isn't it possible to actually transfer patches somehow? the FM oscillator was modeled directly on the DX7.

Really appreciate you listening to them, and pleased you are enjoying them.
I am often surprised myself at the textures that comes out of the Nord, amazing synth.

I did use iSpectrum, when working with the FM stuff, as it really helped being able to see what the sounds where doing while building a patch.

http://dogparksoftware.com/iSpectrum.html

As for a DX7 in the G2, i'm not familiar with the G2, but found there is something called the GX7, by Axiom, that is a transfer tool from DX7 patches to G2, not sure if any good or if they do a Mac version as it looks PC based.

http://m.matrixsynth.com/2006/02/axioms-gx7-dx7-to-g2-conversion-tool.html

Although I imagine it is probably easier to build a DX7 in the G2 , than build a patch in the DX7. :)

yeah, looks like PC only. it's a myth that the DX is hard to program. all you need is a basic concept of FM synthesis... or, use it like i do.. as a 6-oscillator sinewave pad instrument :)

i'll try to get some of my NM patches up here in the coming days.

it took me time to learn some dx7 basics and still an fm aficionado (kb+velocity tracking here are a nightmare, imho), but I ended using a simple basic tip: starting the desired or blank program with algorithms 16,17,18,  leaving operator 1 on, and turning the others off.

you can see why on the table:

http://bb-attachments.cycling74.com.s3.amazonaws.com/3015.Fig414.png.resize

..much more clear to edit following "hierarchy" on operators (and yes, that copy+paste tip on envelopes helps a lot  too!)

love the alising from this machine (converters?), especially on envelopes. dx-tx can sound warm too!

now it´s time for making some ambien-ish stuff with  80´s piano-flute presets :)

best,

pug

I am pleased to hear the DX7 is not as bad to program as I was led to believe. I had a kids Yamaha back when I was pre-teens, and never found that to be a major problem. I am definitely going to have to get my hands on one this year.

Anyway, Nord stuff.

I am just uploading today's blog entry and thought I would share the patch for it on here.

I have had one go in the past at Granular 'styled' efforts, but today thought I would have another bash at it.

After some failed attempts using envelopes and delays, I quickly (and inaccurately) used the phase shifting technique I picked up from I think it was Nobaysu Sakonda's MAX patch many years back, also using the phase to emulate an envelope or sorts, avoiding the click problem I was getting with the normal Envelopes.

I assigned two dials, one for pan spread, and the other for the rate of the 'grains' or envelope movements really, more Synchronous Granular, I think :)

I put some FM tones in more to test but ended up using that mainly for the sound as ran out of time this morning.

It's far from perfect, but I might have a go at tweaked it some more tomorrow morning, or hopefully someone might do that for me :)

Yes, I agree! And it's quite a different take on the NM than what I've heard before.

unable to open your patch.... i copied the text and saved as a pch2 file, but it won't open in the editor....

the MP3 of this one is incredible. deceptively complex. i really want to see the patch for this!

Hmmmm

Thats is annoying. I seem to remember there is some knack to it, as I vaguely remember this issue before. I remember working it out, but can't think what it is now.

I basically opened the Nord G1 file in a text editor and pasted its content, perhaps that is wrong. I noticed you used the G2 extension, not sure if that makes much difference, as I couldn't get my own file to work running from this post, and yet it is that same text when I open it, really odd. Makes me think it is either my opening it in textedit, or a trick in how to put it back.

I couldn't use the attachement as it wouldn't recognise where it is and so I emailed it to you. It's late in London and figured you might like it now :)

Still, hopefully you can work it from the email, and pleased you are enjoying the mp3, at least that works :)

Hi all

Not sure how to open these Nord files again. The one I posted above is from the G1, so sorry for any confusion, I should have mentioned that…of course if anyone would like to donate me a G2, I could avoid this problem in the future :p

Anyway, for those who have the G2 or can't get this loaded in their G! (included me) and would like to see this, Taylor suggested to post a screen grab, good idea too.

I can never work out how to upload pictures or files on the forum, so what I thought was to put the patch and screen grab in a zip at an address to download. (links at the bottom)

In the grab I have tried to keep the connectors as clear as I can, but as you can hopefully see much of it is just repeats, with the LFO phase being the only thing that differs. It is then all the audio is linked between, save having lots more cords running across the patch.

So it's audio on the far left, next row is the phase shift for each grain, third/fourth rows is where the envelope takes from the LFO, the assigned morph pans and random pan postions also taken from the LFOs, then they are all mixed together, probably could have used a bigger mixer but tried to keep them in blocks…kinda.

I assigned the pan, and rate of LFO, so you can get those annoyingly over the top granular effects. More a fan of the slower styled granular, but there it is anyway, and it sort of shows it works I guess.

If anyone can see some faults, as I am sure there are some having done this in a bit of haste, or some improvements please share them. :)

Hope you like it, here is the link:

I found out something by mistake that is probably pretty obvious to most, but somehow I missed it.

When assigning a range to a morph depending which direction you create that range defines if the morph dial controls the sounds from 0-127 or 127-0.

I kept wanting to do this when trying to emulate a pulsar synthesis technique, but never looked it up.

As I always say, but often forget to do myself, it pays to read the manual :)

today's sound is just stellar. it reminds me of a field recording i did of rain that had the steady din of rain in the background with a heavy drip landing periodically on the windowsill.

how did you do that wooden percussion sound?
