DAW opinions with a slant toward midi editing on a mac
« on: January 29, 2012, 01:49:12 am »
I have been using DP for years (still on DP5)... and I am quite happy with it for audio editing... but I have never been a huge fan of the midi editor, as I find it to be far too detailed for what I want to do.

I love the simplicity of the midi editor in reason... but of course reason doesn't allow for plug-ins or other advanced stuff.

so I'm considering moving to another daw which will allow for me to do the advanced stuff when needed... but in general has a clean and simple interface for midi editing.

I downloaded reaper and it is part way to what I'm looking for... but I'm not happy with the way it opens up a separate window for each track (maybe I didn't dive deep enough?).

I'm also looking at logic pro (which is actually cheaper than reaper) but it doesn't seem to support vst.

opinions?  other options I should consider?

Reaper is cheap if you don't make a living out of music : 60$.
And you can edit several MIDI items on the same editor.
See 12.11Working with Multiple Items page 211 on the Reaper Guide

yep, Ableton live has a good MIDI editor for certain things (for example you can not write scores in it), it's really easy to use and there are lots of stuff if you want to dive deep.

Also from what i hear Cubase has a really good MIDI editor but i rarely use Cubase.
Personally, when it comes to MIDI, i like to use Logic.

AFAIK Logic does support VSTs.  The MIDI editing is pretty sharp too.

Logic definitely does NOT support VST plugins.  It only supports Audio Unit (AU) plugins.  It has a great MIDI editor.  Ableton supports both VST and AU plugins and is pretty user friendly.

Can someone share this ? 'cause i cannot download it from the official site for some reason.

Or any other app. in order to run VSTs in Logic. I would appreciate a free app. like the one mentioned above :)
