Any good reverb effects pedals
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:44:02 am »
Can anybody recommend a good reverb effects box?? i've seen a couple like the EHX Cathedral but don't like the idea of having to hold down the button :(
There's the classic boss RV-3 which is a classic, anything decent by strymon???

cheers.

I have the cathedral and I think it sounds pretty good.  There is a mod you can do to the pedal where you add a switch that you can flip for infinite mode.

Strymon has a pedal called 'Blue Sky'.  It looks nice...and does have something similar to infinite mode.  I would check it out:

I was really impressed with the plate shimmer sound, which adds harmonics and octaves of reverb...beautiful, wow...

yeah i've seen the blue sky strymon pedal and it does sound very lush although i think for the price you might be able to get something just as good maybe cheaper, although there's no doubting the strymon sound!! :)

do Boss have any decent reverbs??

i think the blue sky would be the one to get... or perhaps eventide's space pedal.

i've got a cathedral as well but aren't fond of many of the reverbs besides the spring. i don't use it in the studio too much anyway (more of a live device)... but i'd go with one of the two aforementioned ones.

reverb, to me anyway, is one of those things where higher quality really is better. i've yet to hear a "vintage" reverb that doesn't sound grainy and fairly useless... as opposed to vintage delays or whatever that has so much character. ... that is except for spring reverb, which i think has a lot of character... but, this is just my opinion. i prefer reverb to be very transparent... just space, ambience, or air... i like reverb you can't hear... if that makes any sense..

I do like the sound of most strymon gear and the blue sky does sound really nice as does the eventide space both very beautiful reverbs. I think I know what you're getting at Taylor I guess reverb can be created naturally like choosing a particular environment to record natural reverberation. I've listened to the latest Fennesz + Sakamoto release, 'Flumina' and that sounds absolutely amazing. Explores space so well!!

I guess it is a question of taste as always. To me the spring reverb on the cathedral sounds a bit overdrawn but it depends on how much wet signal you want. Maybe the holy grail would do a good job then. The blue sky seems to be awesome. I have a nasty cheap recommendation that I might get banned for: look for some early 90s rack stuff instead (lexicon, Yamaha, korg, Alesis). Yup, if you are also into shoegaze tones they seem to be the ticket.

you're far away from being banned for a valuable tip!
i adore the reverb on the ensoniq asr10 (dp2/dp4 should be identical). unfortunately, those don't go too cheap nowadays. therefore i cannot give a general recommendation for these...

I have one such rack, the Alesis, it's a pretty amazing dust gathering contraption.

I have the midiverb III, 16 bit iirc. I didn't mean it's good for nothing, I happened to actually get it for nothing and never got to use it yet.

Dust collecting is a hobby of mine.

On that note, I got a Furman RV-1 spring reverb (rackmount) for around $70-80.  It's a little noisy and muddy, but I like it.  I run things out to it from my interface for processing.

I use the Alesis Midiverb 4 rack mount. It truly is hard to find budget wise reverb pedal. Love Strymon but you do pay for it.

Yeah the strymon gear is amazing!! I know it's not a reverb effects pedal but I like the sound of the el capistan, the sounds you can get out of that little box is incredible :) I need more money!!!!

The el capistan is one of my favourite pedals for sure. And its spring reverb (one of the secondary function) is pretty nice, too.
My favourite reverb at the moment is the alesis wedge. Some people hate it. It is a bit easier to tweak than the rack effects. If I had the money I'd buy the blue sky reverb for sure. One of my friends loves the RV-3 boss but it is also rather early/digital and prices are insane...
