mille plateaux relaunch
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:10:51 pm »
over the microsound announce list i've received this mail today:

--

this is Marcus Gabler, new owner and A&R of Mille Plateaux.
We will be relaunching in May.

Expect
- Clicks & Cuts 05
- new artists
- new sublabels
- a new website
and most of all: great new music.

Do NOT expect: a new musical revolution or Glitch 2.0! :-)

Be the first to know about our development:
Sign up to our newsletter:
www.mille-plateaux.com

We also welcome any suggestions regarding promotion and distribution
or any other assistance you might be able to provide.
Do you want to get a digital promo kit - or know someone we should
send one to? Let us know, we will be happy to do so.

Looking forward to hear from you.

Thanks, Marcus.

--

now i don't think this is the best idea of the world to relaunch the label again,
but after visiting the website i've stumbled over this (in the demo section):

Demos of any musical genre are welcome.
Abstract or dance, digital or acoustic, Electronic or Jazz.
Since we also handle other labels, even Rock etc. will be appreciated.

--

after reading this i think it's actually a very bad idea to relaunch mille plateaux...
sometimes it good that things also change and move on!

yeah there have been a few attempted relaunches of this label but I think the time has passed.  I recall on the old forum we had a thread debating the termination of term. and I'm sure I expressed something similar there.  sometimes a project (be it a band or a record label or whatever) is actually finished, and we can just let it be.

so many innovative labels and sprung up and developed (and in some cases, folded) since the demise of MP 1.0  - it just seems like a cash in on what used to be a familiar brand.

i agree, billy.

i actually had a meeting with marcus while in poland a year ago. he was a very nice guy, but very poorly informed about electronic music. i'm not quite sure why he decided to buy the rights of Mille Plateaux.

MP was once a great label, giant in our world.. probably because of achim who ran the label and his vision. relaunching it now... no... let the good memories be.

it would be like if billy took over 12k...

Heard about this on another board. Would be good if they could get some of the original artists back on board to lend a bit more credibility, but yeah, the more I learn about this I'm not so sure it's a good idea.

We'll have to see what happens...

while MP is/was one of my favourite labels, i don't like the idea of it being resurrected without the original ethos.  if, like taylor says, the new owner doesn't genuinely understand the musical ideas connected with the original label, it sounds like it's simply a business venture.  in which case it's just milking it, and having the 5th installment of clicks n cuts as its first priority proves a lack of vision.

Isn't there some responsibility with the previous owner too, to ensure the label's legacy is preserved, or at least in good hands?
I wasn't a mille plateaux fan, but I can understand people's reservations about it.
Using the name could turn out to be more of a burden than a bonus if so many people feel this way about it.

sure, in the old 12k forum, there was a thread about favourite clicks + cuts releases from back in the day.  it was a nice, nostalgic look at that particular period in electronic music.  no need to reinvent the genre with a new compilation, even if it's with new artists.
i guess i would always make the comparison between "classic" mille plateaux and any newly relaunched version, especially if it was run by different people.

I think this is why previous reboots haven't been successful - the audience base ("us") just don't "get" the reboot.

exactly...there are so many classic releases, beyond the first 3 clicks+cuts comps, that really defined and expanded my listening 10 years ago (!) - that any reboot, regardless of how "serious" it is, will suffer by comparison unless the new releases are really knockout amazing.

i'm realy skeptic about this relaunch. Most of the time for the reasons you all already mentioned.

If i remember correctly, there was a lot of money issues involved in the end phase of mille plateaux with a lot of artists not getting paid and such. i wonder how this is going to be worked out.
