PhantomPower guitar ?
« on: July 02, 2011, 07:40:36 am »
Well, maybe it's a stupid question but i keep wondering if i can use the Phantom Power that my sound card provides to record my guitar...maybe this way i can strengthen the guitar signal. I don't know if it can be done and i don't know if it will make any difference to the signal.
I have read somewhere that it can be done, somehow...but i didn't pay any attention then :P

For the record i have a RME fireface 400 and basically my whole studio is a computer, guitars, midi controllers, the RME, Line 6 pod XT live and various pedals...That's why i want a technique to strengthen my guitar signal, no fancy convertors or hardwares unfortunately and mainly i work with softwares...it's just a bedroom you see....

I don't think that this is possible as phantom power is supplying voltage to a mic and guitar is based on impedance. Are you not able to get  enough signal through your pod and and the preamps on the fireface? Plus you can always just normalize it after the fact(kidding).

I see...well i think i am satisfied with the sound but you know we can always do better and i was always curious aboht phantom power on a guitar if this is possible somehow. Its a shame though that i mostly use my pod xt as a preamp and i guess that i can do much, much more with it and thats because i mostly use softwares.

You will never need to phantom power your guitar. Try using the eq in the "STOMP" slot before the amp model. Try several shapes of eq and different gain settings. You will discover a lot of beautiful tones. Try reading: http://www.amptone.com/

Thanks a lot for your reply reply....i know what you mean about the several shapes of eq and different gains and pickup positions.
I will try this "trick" with the STOMP slot that you described...Also thanks for the link seems really useful!
