Yes, the artificial light and wooden table top really help to bring out the brownness of the packaging.  Strangely the music isn't brown at all! :-)

haven't got round to the second cd variations though, now might be a good time to dip in actually, given that i'm now pretty familiar with the cd1 versions.

Yes, the variations are subtle so some familiarity is required.  Apart from the original, I've only listened to V11 in any detail but I did find that the mood was slightly different, a bit more agitated in that particular case.
