What's your favorite part of the process?
« on: April 23, 2011, 11:10:10 am »
May it be music or any other form of art you dabble in. Not asking about the why and reasons behind it, that could get convoluted. But tangibly, practically, which part of the work do you get your kicks from mostly?

In art the construction or process...

In music the final stages...

the disconnecting of myself from whatever it is that i just created and living in the disbelief that I just did that - the reconnection.

well put!

i guess i'll give a little input myself.
i like that you speak of disconnection from what is created, it's a very similar thing here i guess, i live for the lightbulb moments, where in the midst of trials and errors you stumble upon something that is totally new to you and unexpected. that's obviously pretty arbitrary and whether it will make other people's bulbs light up is up to chance in a sense. but in that moment where this thing hits you, that doesn't matter one bit, there's a complete identification with the work. Not so much in a personal / merit way, but in a sense of being there as a part of a creation process, not one bit distracted from it.

that's something i have a hard time putting into words, with a second language too, but this is definitely my drug of choice.

other parts of the process are interesting, sure, but i guess maybe i'm a junkie for that rush, because none seem to come close in terms of pure enjoyment.

i really love that moment, early in the creation of a song, that i know i have a keeper.. when i've got a few sounds going, or loops or whatever, and it all gels into something i could listen to over and over.. that's the fun part... hitting that spot.... after that tends to be a lot of editing and thinking and making sure the composition and mix can sustain repeated listening.

It's all good except the donkey work!  editing samples I find really dull.  Calculation work for tunings or what ever, can also be a bit of a pain, but the results make up for it in the end.

I should slap you in the face and walk away dramatically.

I may have skipped that part a couple of times...  :-\

I'm a bit of a tinkerer and will often re-write, re-record or dismantle tracks until I'm completely happy with them so I think my favourite part of the process is when the track feels finished and I'm sure that's the state it will stay in.

Forgot to say how very funny I found this!  Still loads more samples on their way for me to get board with.  Contemplating a new runningonair album which should be packed full of the little buggers!

For me, the best moments :

when i have my guitar in my hands trying to transform thoughs or ideas or pictures into sound...time just stops and it is the best feeling!

and when everything seem to fall into place and you can visualize your next steps in order to finish what you started..

I'm a bit of a tinkerer and will often re-write, re-record or dismantle tracks until I'm completely happy with them

this situation can be really tricky. many times i just lose faith in one track and i just abandon it...

Also, I do hate editing samples...it can be really dull and painful but the good thing is that you can stop whenever you like :P

i can be really psychotic some times with my music or work.

Well....

many hours in front of the screen + 10 cups of coffee + one packet of cigarettes + limited amount of sleep + stress = panic attacks

but i stopped doing that ;)
