japan
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:37:52 pm »
hi everyone

i'm sure many of you have been affected by the horrible news coming out of japan.. it's affected me deeply and sort of paralyzed me from getting anything else done in the last few days... falling behind on work for sure.

anyway, i just wanted to let you all know that all of the 12k artists from japan are safe and doing their best to cope.. and, as well, if you haven't heard, i'm donating all of the profits from the sales from the online shop for the rest of the month to an earthquake relief fund set up by new york's Japan Society.

you can find info on them here:

http://www.japansociety.org/news

horrible news and images every day.. .

Yeah, similar initiative here (of course I won't raise nearly as much $ as 12k shop, nevertheless, seems like the thing to do.)

For tax purposes (I'm Canadian) not sure going through an American charity fund will work out though, I was thinking of donating profits to the Red Cross, but then how much will really get there? that's always the question...

If anyone knows of a Canadian entity that can also guarantee like Japan Society here that the money really gets there, it's appreciated.

Hats off to your generosity Taylor.

Also, if anyone wants to contribute, here's a collaborative effort between netlabels & artists to get a donations for a compilation thing going: http://twitter.com/internetlabel

this is the most horrible thing I've seen from a long time indeed, I remember being there 2 years ago and all the nice people we've met, some coming from around the places now destroyed. This is terrible, and I hope they're all safe and well.
This is very noble from you, and also sad to see some other people already taking advantage of the situation for their own profit (traders, speculators, etc...)

this is really great of you taylor.
we over at the monome forum are doing what we can, even though it's not as powerfull as you, we are releasing a free web album soon to talk people into donating. we tried to make it a "buy this album and the money goes to japan" but i turned out to be harder to set up than we wanted. but we are trying to get some donations going.

yes, the greed and cynicism of the Wall St. gang never lets up.
speculating on drops in Japanese shares, which in turn drives those prices even lower, is especially low.

hope everyone is keeping safe over there.
can't help but be struck by how dignified the Japanese are in the face of such a disaster too.

More money goes in than comes out.
Find smaller organizations who can make an immediate difference.

we bought 10,000 yen's worth of nappies (diapers) and powdered milk and brought them to the local government office which is accepting donations.  plus we're rounding up boxes of unused colthing to send later.

Wonderful work here Taylor. It has been heartwarming to see all the fundraising by so many artists and labels over the past week or so.

5 hour long download compilation by Thrill Jockey.
All benefits go to Japan
http://fina-music.com/catalog/index.html?id=105344

Amazing line-up.
While I never buy digital music I made an exception this time.

Though, be warned: the site of Thrill Jockey is having big problems right now...(I haven't managed to actually download the compilation so far in the past hour).
