Sounds of the anatomy

This is probably the best place to get input about this, I'd like to record specific sounds of the anatomy. And meanwhile ideally I'd insert a microphone by poking holes in someone, I'm not sure about the ethical implications... 

Jokes aside, I get the impression a contact microphone is my best bet. Any ideas? Suggestions? make/models/etc. appreciated too.

Yikes. That concept makes me cringe.

I would imagine contact mics would be your best bet, as they more or less function on the same principles as stethoscopes. Might have to try that out myself...would love to record my roommate's kitten's ridiculous heart rate. That thing runs HOT!

I've heard that portable ultrasound units are actually a lot better for this than contact mics...

I use binaural microphones in my ears for field recordings.  On one occasion the ambient sound and wind was so quiet (it was at the edge of Death Valley), all I really heard on the recording seemed to be that of my respiratory and circulatory systems.

I have thought about swallowing hydrophones in the past, but they are usually really expensive.

The Cold Gold stethoscope looks really cool, a little expensive but probably less expensive than cutting people open could end up costing you...
