Mixing for Vinyl
« on: February 05, 2011, 04:09:24 am »
I have to mix a song that will be in vinyl format but I haven't done anyhting for vinyl before, so it will be the first time for me. I want to ask if I have to pay more attention to certain issues like frequencies (especially bass frequencies and probably really high frequencies as well), dB, limiters…I think that if I want to make the sound more bright I have to pay attention to the mid frequencies somewhere between 3 and 6 kHz but I don’t really know for sure.

If anyone could help would be great  :)

when songs are cut to vinyl the bass frequencies are one area of concern.. as they should be in phase and not too stereo.... this is something the mastering engineer or cutting engineer can take care of, though.

also, high frequency sibilance can have problems.. distorting easily..

the mastering engineer can take care of most of the issues for vinyl..

also, don't slam the volume of your mixes too much. i recently did a mastering job where the client wanted the mixes really really loud... i warned them against it... and the vinyl cutter had to turn it down nearly 10db to get a safe cut to vinyl...

Not much more to say. I pay attention to the bass frequencies, cut everything below 40hz and made everything mono under 150 hz.

It's interesting given the limitations of the format, that it still so popular.   :)

Are we talking about peaks here or overall RMS?

mostly peaks.. and mostly high frequency peaks...

tho, as a personal style, i also avoid low mid muddy peaks... but, that's just me.
