What is the oldest piece of software-hardware you use?
« on: January 29, 2011, 11:36:20 am »
An interesting topic came up in the "Chance and random composing tools" thread:

Old music softwares running in old computers, laptops, powerbooks, etc.

So, here you have a few interesting questions you may want to answer (you can add your own questions too):

- What is the oldest piece of software that you are still using?
- What is the oldest working computer/OS that you have?
- What is the oldest piece of (electronic) hardware you have?
- What is the oldest musical instrument (any kind) you may have?

In my case, my oldest computer/OS is a PC running Windows XP. Not a big deal, I know, but I have a guitar from my grandgrandma from 1836. It looks like crap, has a big hole in one side and sounds so bad, I am sure John Cage would had offered big money if he were still alive (God bless him). ;-)
Have a nice weekend guys!

the oldest thing I own is a Yamaha DX21 synth but it's in the attic!
recently upgraded my old pc from 2003 with XP to a newer i7 pc and win7 so I'm feeling all modern these days.

i'm always up for gear games...

but do you mean oldest as in we've owned it for a long time, or oldest as in original production date? i'll go with the latter..

- the oldest software that i still use every day is Audioease's Periscope plug in.. not sure when this came out, but it was a while ago.

- oldest working computer? not so old.. a 3-year old mac book pro

- old electronic hardware? i guess that would be my pro one monosynth.. first produced in 1981

- oldest instrument of any kind? i think it would still be my pro one... i wanted to get my dad's banjo.. which he's had for ages.. but he gave it away a few years ago.

I'm increasingly going backwards with my equipment... most of this is all fairly recent purchases trying to move away from using a computer for anything more than recording...

oldest electronic hardware - Korg mini700, tascam m-30 mixer, akai 4000d reel to reel and a pair of b&o s30 speakers... so much veneer ;) all from around the mid 70's

oldest instruments - pair of yamaha acoustics from the early 60's (nylon + steel)

oldest software... probably kt granulator...

oldest computer, rarely used 12" powerbook from 2003

the oldest for me, is a 1964 Gibson LG-1 acoustic guitar. The oldest hardware is a Digitech RDS 8000 Digital Delay. It has a repair sticker from 1991 on it. For our 12k CD (and the ep coming out soon), that was Molly's favorite piece of gear for her voice loops. It's got a bit of grit and you can slow down and speed up loops microtonally. There was a really good interview with Hank Shocklee a few years ago in TapeOp where he talked about Public Enemy's use of early samplers and looping delays and how they'd have delays and samplers and then have to get used to moving up to the cleaner sounds of 8-bit...

well, my oldest hardware is either my Roland AlphaJuno or Mattel Synsonics.  both sadly out of use right now.  I think I can change tho!

most of my software is very contemporary - if I had an OS9 system that would be very different, but, eh, it wasn't worth the upkeep.  Spektral Delay is the only software I really miss.

Have you checked out Spectral Conquest from Expert Sleepers?
http://www.expert-sleepers.co.uk/spectralconquest.html
It seems similar to the way I remember Spektral Delay... I like all of the Expert Sleepers stuff...

- What is the oldest piece of software that you are still using?
Probably Making Waves 2.something, only use it for very specific things
- What is the oldest working computer/OS that you have?
Only one computer, PC, about 3 yrs old, still runs on XP
- What is the oldest piece of (electronic) hardware you have?
Probably my Soundcraft board, 200B
- What is the oldest musical instrument (any kind) you may have?
Uhm, my voice? as I was born with it!

I used to have an old Korg PolyEnsemble synth and echo box that were probably older than me, but I got rid of them a while back.

well I will definitely check that out.  right....now.

I've been using a MaxMSP external for a few years but nothing is quite the same - I thought Spektral Delay was a really well written app.

Why are you, billygomberg missing Spectral Delay? Is it a matter of the OS you use? I thought the program was still around...

I forgot to mention that I have been lately in the process of recovering some old pieces of music I recorded in Cakewalk starting in 1997 and putting them in Ableton. It is really interesting what you can do with your old ideas and the new tools. Kind of having a cell with the DNA and bringing dinosaurs back to life! ;-)
Before that, I started programing music for some performances and art installations with a small sequencer Yamaha QY10. I remember using it connected to a midi guitar! I don't know were it can be now :-(

Anyway I am enjoying this kind of anthropological, archeological thread. Thank you guys for your inputs!

NI discontinued Spektral Delay maybe three or four years ago, and I think it was the 10.5 OSX version that finally killed it for me.

I was trying to create something similar with MAX but this is more sophisticated.

NICE!

I'm a guitar guy, so its all about old gear for me.

-1980 Gibson "The Paul"
-late 70's Marshall Super Bass 100w head.
-late 2005 G5 (just updated Logic 7 to 8. Not an easy find).
-Also have a 2nd generation Roland RS-09 synth. Organ and strings only.

i still use spektral delays lots... one of the reasons i'm still working with 10.4 OSX.
it's really a great program. but probably will have to shift sooner or later
(latest when a new computer is needed).

I still use my first guitar, which is a BC Rich, from 1999 or 2000, some Boss pedals from the same period and an old IBM thinkpad with WIN.XP and Sonar 4.
