My music-a-day project - SIGHUPyear
« on: January 16, 2011, 11:25:09 am »
I find thing-a-day projects really inspiring, like Marcus's dustbreeding blog in 2009, Taylor's Polaroid and sound-a-day projects, the moonmilk instrument-a-day projects every February. On New Year' Day, I found myself in-between major projects, and on the spur of the moment, I decided to start a music-every-day project for the year.

It's meant to be a daily sketchbook sort of thing, and I'm pleased with the results thus far. Sixteen clips already up, as befits the calendar's progress.

I've set up a radio player in the sidebar of the site for anyone inclined to shuffle through the tracks, and started a set on Soundcloud to post highlights now and again: http://soundcloud.com/sighup/sets/sighupyear/

Enjoying these, thanks.

Funny sometimes I somehow get two playing at once, which creates a kind of mashup, which still works.

Thanks for listening.

That's odd that more than one track would play, must be a bug in the audio plugin I use. But it's good to know the tracks layer nicely.

A bump for this to note I've made it to the one-month mark for the project. Yay!

Thanks.

I'll only be posting one or two peices a month on Soundcloud. I would recommend following the RSS feed if you want to get each daily post:

At the beginning of the project, I considered using Soundcloud, but I figured I would need a Pro account at minimum to house 365 files. Since I pay for web server space already, and my server's uptime is generallly better than Soundcloud's, I decided it would be best to save my money.

fantastic steve.

i love that i'm seeing more thing a day project blogs popping up.  the year that i spent on doing my dust breeding projects every day still is one of the most productive and important years i've ever had.
can't wait to see how your projects progress.

Including making a baby girl, if I recall correctly. My son's almost eight, and I'm good with the one child, so no babies in this project.

Your project and Taylor's sound a day project were big inspirations to me in general, as have been the oo-ray tracks of the week. I like the anticipatory routine of these kinds of projects. I'm excited that moonmilk's annual instrument-a-day project just started: http://www.moonmilk.com/2011/02/02/instrument-a-day-1-lumpy-guitar/

I may even try to make some instruments for tracks on this project. Something I've never really done before.

For anyone here who is a fan of these kinds of daily routine projects, I've recently been introduced to a few such projects. One of then side benefits of doing this project I've found is becoming acquainted with others doing the same kind of thing. Here are some links.

An ongoing daily sound diary:

A weekly compendium of 70 seconds of sound, 10 seconds recorded daily:

A recently completed project of 10 seconds of video posted every day:
