I noticed Taylor is having the same grief with regards facebook pages vs profiles.
I've always found this really confusing and annoying.
I'd rather be directing people to my artist page but most seem to just connect with my profile page.
I'm never sure which one to update with what and which people see what I post.

I'd just like to keep a profile page for people I know but still be able to get updates from them.
Also there doesn't seem to be a any way of friends even knowing I have a page from my profile, there's no links apparent anywhere.
Do I just keep sending messages to friends to like my pages or something?
I hate thinking I'm spamming folk all the time, but what to do?
I wish my profile url was my page url but probably too late for that as it wont let you change anything :(

Anyone got any good tips with regards all this confusion!?

my advice:

ditch facebook

man, do i regret signing up....

i'll stick with it as a necessary evil for a little bit and see if it grows on me or continues to annoy.... one thing i'm going to do though is not post anything on my personal page... and update only the music page... so maybe i'll bore people to death on the personal page and make them gravitate towards the music one.

for all ya:

yeah you might be right taylor!
I hardly ever post on my profile, hadn't gone near it for months til recently.
it's handy for seeing what everyone else is up to though.

how did you get rid of the numbers in your page url?
can you edit it?

I never started on facebook and see how carefree I am?   ;D

ditched myspace months ago and haven't looked back.  I guess this prompts a larger question about the necessary evil of social networking, but also the real effectiveness of it for "people like us"

I tried Facebook for a while and absolutely hated it, it just seems like it's the web for people who miss AOL. I guess it would be good if I was inclined to keep in touch with people I knew in high school, but I'm not, and I found it tedious to try to keep personal stuff separate from music/public stuff. I actually made a few good contacts through Myspace at the height of its popularity, but then its utility dissipated pretty quickly as it became more of way to encourage sycophancy than any kind of valuable networking.

I deleted many of my "social media" accounts a year or so ago. At a certain point it just becomes too much to maintain for minimal gain.

this is another item for me - I'm happy to put my time into my own site (doesn't require daily/hourly updating) and own promotional paths.  It seems that if you want to really properly facebook, you've got to give it a lot of time every day.

oh ralph I'll be yr friend.  :-*

I agree with this. This arena of sound-art we are in is a fairly narrow niche, and doesn't necessitate a broad promotional vehicle like any of the aforementioned social networks anymore. Maybe a few years ago this was the case, but it seems like access points have been streamlined for individuals seeking this type of output for the most part, and are consistently becoming more streamlined and consolidated. I find it more interesting to frequent boards like this that congregate individuals with the wherewithal of whats what than the cesspool of social networking where one needs to filter through a mass of garbage to find any kind of nugget of value.

I've left my myspace and facebook pages active, primarily as a means at this point to drive interested parties to my personal website. thats about it.

i agree with the above. since setting up my facebook page i really have no interest whatsoever to update it and, frankly, sort of want to shut it down 2 weeks after setting it up.

but, i might as well keep it up so people who are so into this can find me and then find to be what i consider the more important information portals: the website and twitter.

curiously enough, though.. people are listening to the songs i have posted on facebook, looking at the photos, etc... wondering if these people have simply not listened to this stuff before 'cos it hasn't been on facebook. you can see all of my photos on my photo website and hear all the songs on the 12k website or itunes...

but, like someone else pointed out, facebook is like the new AOL. a totally enclosed internet where people never need to leave to get all of their information.

i am a facebook junkie...
But would love to see all those musicians and labels get pages instead of profiles but a lot of them use their profile as promotional tool so that's why I add them. Others I have added just because they seem like great people to me who I want to be in touch with.
Others I actually do not have a clue, and some are really friends of mine...

Anyhow:
Profile: http://www.facebook.com/sietse.van.erve
Orphax (my solo music): http://www.facebook.com/pages/Orphax/52717723315
Moving Furniture Records (my label): http://www.facebook.com/pages/Moving-Furniture-Records/42504797725
Zonderland (my old band): http://www.facebook.com/pages/Zonderland/147805511905202

and for those interested in Twitter: http://twitter.com/MovingFurniture

and if you hate any form of SocialMedia, well just do some googling (or check my websites) :p

lol yeah I know what you mean.
I don't think facebook is the kind of thing that people use to discover new music or anything but it has its uses.

that's the problem though, I don't think you can have a page without having a profile too, so it gets confusing.
I've different people who are 'friends' with my profile and 'fans' who liked my page, and I never know if I should update both and if that means some people get double posts.

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's what I was doing most of the time. Now I have separated things a bit more, though important things like a new release I post on both.
