I need a new midi controller
« on: December 02, 2010, 07:18:01 pm »
Hello all, it is good to finally be back on this forum. My question today is regarding midi controllers. Since Christmas is around the corner, I figured Santa Claus might get me a new controller. The question is, which one should I get? Currently I have a M-Audio Oxygen 25 key keyboard and a Korg NanoPad. I would really like a controller with lots of knobs and faders since I have pads and keys already. Any suggestions? The more knobs the better.

                                                                                             Thanks, Aidan

how about Faderfox LD2

http://www.faderfox.de/mark/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=114&Itemid=217

second generation is discontinued but still available. I have the LV2 and love it. no usb though. third generation has usb but non of the controllers has as many knobs as the LD2.

or Behringer BCR 2000 maybe. can you ask for more knobs?

going through a little sorting out of my kit and I too would like to get a better MIDI controller - currently got a M-Audio O2, and would like something with wheels rather than buttons if nothing else, for modulation/pitch bend, but still pretty compact.

my instinct's are taking me to the Arturia Analog Factory Experience - anything else out there I should consider? any reason why I should dodge the Arturia? details at:

http://www.arturia.com/evolution/en/products/analog-factory-experience/intro.html

part of the question stems from wondering if a compact synth might end up being more flexible. while a little more money, would I get more bang from:

MicroKorg /MicroKorg XL
Alesis Ion
Akai Miniak

Part of me is wondering if the sequencing potential of the later two may even replace the bulky RM1x I've picked up recently... the price of the latter is almost the same as the Arturia in the UK...

prefer to keep the solution compact, and have something that can work standalone or plugged into the computer - it'll be playing with a Doepfer Dark Energy and an RM1x as well as software synths, and I'll be working on a Mac...

chiming in here, but could anyone recommend a nice usb/midi keyboard with semi weighted keys? i don't need any knobs or faders, etc. just a nice slim keyboard with decent key action to sit in front of my computer on my small desk, with 4 octaves or so.

I love my good old UC-33e by Evolution. It's discontinued but you can easily get one on Ebay around 150$. (24 knobs, 9 faders).

I stand by my M-Audio Axiom that I picked up a few years back.  25 keys, semi-weighted, real size, USB or wall-wart power.  Knobs and pads, real MIDI ports, sustain pedal port, pitch bend, mod wheel, transport controls.  I'm sure their newer gear is as nice.  or I'd hope.

This spring I picked up an Akai MPKmini which yeah is pretty mini, but fits in my gigging kit better!
