so.

I've basically told the whiskey buyer at my local that Van Winkle is my jam and two days later he produces this for me.

unstoppable bourbon.  magnificent.

sitting on the shelf-

Elijah Craig 12 year

and my current favorite, Templeton Rye, yum.

there is an empty spot on the shelf that would fit a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year nicely, i should get on that.

reviving this old thread 'cos i saw a bottle of Lagavulin 16-year old (was $84) that came highly recommended.. as it is apparently super smokey... which interests me... haven't bought it yet...

but anyone ever had it?

Haven't ever tried it (that I can remember...), but for a peaty feel, have you tried Talisker? The basic 10 year old is lovely, and the "Distillers Mark" is good too, slightly older and sweeter.

Lagavulin 16 is indeed to recommend highly.  Very smokey but a long finish.  7 years ago it was a $60 bottle so consider that an indicator of it's popularity and value to yr liquor shelf.

lagavulin is an islay malt, my favourite kind of single malt.  very smoky and peaty, sometimes a bit of an aquired taste.  the first time i tried one years ago i thought it tasted like a cross betwen medicine and dirt!  but once you get it, islays are hard to beat.  if the lagavulin goes down well, i'd recommend bowmore or laphroaig, these are easy to find and decently priced.

in santa fe, new mexico for the past few days. tonight, right now, in front of me, is a glass of Lagavulin 16. it was *only* $22 at the bar. but, damn.. it's good stuff. goes in smooth, and the smokey flavor doesn't appear until after you swallow it.

nice. gotta get me a bottle back home.

...and don't forget, even if it sounds strange, to add some water in it, because it will reveal a whole world of new flavors you can't taste when the level of alcohol is high. The difference is amazing on all these Islay single malts. True scottish drinkers do it that way ;)

wow $22 is steep for a glass.  unless it's a truly healthy pour.  i think Lagavulin 16 is maybe a $15 pour by me.

a splash of water is really "to taste" with something like Lagavulin 16 which isn't cask strength.
