True scottish drinkers do it that way adding water is a matter of taste. i prefer not to, as i like the bite (and if my drink cost 22 dollars definitely not! ). it does slightly alter the taste though, and sometimes for the better, so it's worth checking to see which you prefer. back in ireland when you order a whiskey, you'll always be served a small decanter of water (room temp) to alter to your particular taste. the one difference between american and british drinkers is the addition of ice. pretty normal in the states but rare in the uk.
