on a serious note, i think that the future of physical music sales will really move toward the product becoming more of an art object.

more limited quantities with some kind of enhanced packaging.  if you pair that with the instant download while you wait for your order to ship (great idea taylor) i think you could be on to something.

i am a sucker for good design and nice packaging... i think a lot of other people out there are too.  that mixed with a well curated label is a recipe for building a loyal following.  people will take a chance buying something that they might not have picked up otherwise because of this level of trust that has developed.

as for formats, i still buy CDs and vinyl and the occasional cassette but something that i've seen a few people do and that i find interesting are well packaged 7"s with maybe 2 tracks but then come with a download code for those two + additional tracks.  in theory making an album out of a single.

i think that the trick really will be figuring out the right balance of what people want and what is financially viable.
in the next few years i think we will see a lot of labels trying a bunch of different things.
interesting times.

ha.. didn't mean to be so apocalyptic on the eve of your release :)

maybe i should just throw them all away and cancel the release.. yeah, i'll live out my pessimistic theories tomorrow!

yeah, marcus hit on some points that i think are helping 12k stay afloat...  trying to keep a well-curated label.. keeping production numbers (of physical releases) in check and realistic...

with all this being said.. as negative as i'm being about things... i'm mostly playing devil's advocate here.. worrying, no doubt, but wondering where this is all heading...

it's a super strange time to be running a label!

That's a great idea, Marcus. i never thought of that.

On a more general level. I fear that the importance of physical releases will drop even more. But there are still a lot of people out there, who are interested in it. Maybe the numbers will continue to drop. What was a small release a couple of years ago with 1,000 or 1,500 copies will no be a bigger release while smaller releases reside in the 500 to 1,000 area.

One thing that really does bother me, is the aspect of performing. it just doesn't work for everybody. Most of my music is quite hard to perform live because it involves off-line processing and such.
Plus with all those bigger artists pushing more and more into the live market, even smaller venues are booked with bigger artists making it hard for smaller artists to find venues. For example places, where could possibly play a couple of years ago now have people playing there, who can easily attract audiences in the range of 500 people. That also means more niche artist get pushed to even smaller, more unknown venues to play. I don't know how many concerts/performances i missed in the last year just because the venue was just a small gallery, which does nearly no promotion. The Lawrence English/Room 40 night in cologne was such an example. i learned about this days after the event. And it was at some place i never heard of. I wonder how many people were there.

Have you considered selling downloads direct from the 12k shop, or does the extra cost negate the benefits of cutting out the middlemen (itunes, amazon, eMusic, etc)?

I think cds are good until they have some nice little wav/flac player, like an mp3 player but a wav/flac player. Do they have these yet?

Just thinking:

a CD is a material object, vinyl also. A label gets money selling physical media filled with music or transmiting digitally the music.

Then:

What are the material objects that kids value the most?
What if the record look and feel like those sexy things that kids like?
Would I buy a black monolith that plays music?
I would not buy it if only plays BEP all day, but what if only plays InsertYourFavoriteMusicHere?
How could I tune that forbidden channel X that only broadcasts once every 5 years?

Having a million hours of audio in you HD is cool... but it's not sexy. LedZep didn't sold their albums in white labels after all. Make it massive, but sexy & cheap or expensive, exclusive & classy.

I think ipods can play wav files...
