billy gomberg + offthesky "flyover sound"
« on: October 03, 2010, 01:37:58 pm »
the end of a mystery!!

so.. the other month i heard on fluid radio this most amazing track.. but all it said on the playlist was "they were at the beach." no artist title, no album.. nothing...

i asked fluid, they didn't know what it was... i posted on twitter if anyone had heard of anything called "they were at the beach"...

no one had.. so, for the past months i've been listening to this amazing song by a mystery artist..

today on twitter someone mentions this album and.. indeed... the song is on this album... mystery solved!

so.. to billy and jason...  WOW. amazing work, guys... one of the best "electronic" pieces i've heard all year, and longer, for that matter.

but.. what's sad and embarassing.. is that i HAVE this cd.. jeremy (from experimedia) sent it to me with a few CDs and it's in my "to listen to" pile.... the damn masterpiece has been under my nose this whole time...

well done, gentlemen.. well done. beautiful. beautiful.

t.

Been listening to this a lot lately, great for sunny day photo walks.  Loving the multitude of different sounds on this album, always changing and sound design.  Are most of these sound arrived at through granular synthesis? Maybe reaktor?

Well, great album. Gonna snap some photo's today, sun's out.

I use Reaktor, MaxMSP and Logic.  so yeah that's three big chances to granulate, but, at least based on the work I did on "Flyover Sound," I wouldn't say "most" of the material got granulated, but I can tell you that technique certainly got used in a couple ways.  are there particular passages you are thinking of?

good luck with the photography!

Hey Billly

There were two parts specifically i was curious about, if you feel obliged to share.  The first being the second half of Wailing Walls (3 min mark), there is a new section that comes in and slowly builds.  Sort of sounds like some distressed guitar of some sort maybe?  And the second part being in Eyelids. I would say it would be the main melody that goes through the whole song and has that similar sound as in wailing walls.

Again, great album and thanks for your insight.

Thanks billy for letting go of some "songwriting" techniques. Max/Msp and Reaktor seem like such great tools but there seems to be such a steep learning curve/high cost for each that have kept me from not getting into these.  Maybe something to think about for the future.

ps
Any new releases on the way?
