Very compact midi controller
« on: September 23, 2010, 01:52:57 pm »
Hi all,

I'm looking for a very compact midi controller, preferable with 4 to 8 knobs only. The Doepfer pocket control would be fitting my needs, but unfortunately i cannot find one for sale - at least not for a reasonable price. I hope you guys may have a suggestion for a standard / custom controller.

Thanks in advance!  :)

Best, Roel

do you mean "midi only" or also usb midi controller? if the latter, the akai lpd8 is quite nice. i like the feel better than the korg nano stuff.

Rene,

Can be either midi only or USB. Tha Akai looks compact and comes at a nice price. Will keep it in mind.

Thanks for your suggestion.

i can only highly recommend nanoKontrol by Korg. been using it for several months now (with audiomulch) and like it a lot. it's a budget controller so don't expect it to be very precise(it's bearable, you'll get use to it after a week). yet, for this price it's awesome and has lots of potential (all knobs and faders can be programmed by dedicated software). and it is surprisingly well built. together with nanoPad they make an insane set.

you could roll your own with one of these:

no extra techy stuff required except wiring some pots/buttons.

I made one of these:

depending on how many notes you really need - you could use a VERY small softpot!

Another DIY solution is the MIDItron:

I have one sitting next to my desk, although I've yet to actually do anything with it, so can't really say much more about it.

Would the Minicommand by Ruin&Wesen suit your needs?

just be VERY careful when transporting them.. i've already lost a slider from my nanocontrol and a key from my nano key...

the price and stuff is nice, but i think the build quality will prevent me from buying these again..

Yep, noticed! Quality and durability are according to the price. It just sits on my desk in the living room for quick sessions where i don't need any keys. For that, it'll do.
