On the subject of loopers, my Stereo Memory Man is having some funky issues with its bypass switch. It's unreliable at best, often taking several clicks to engage properly. It's really annoying. Has anyone else seen this issue when their SMM?

good thing is the smmwh is designed to have the switch(s) swapped out fairly easily (each switch is soldered to its own break out board). if you are handy with a soldering iron i imagine you would get by for under an hour and $10 for parts

as far as i know the only looper that supports looping several tracks with differing lengths at the same time is the electrix repeater. i never saw one so i cannot confirm this; the repeater is rare piece of hardware, so it's most probable that i'll never know for sure. ;)
if the 2880 had individual outs for each track it could possibly cover most of your needs.

But just looking at the device, it has a bare 4 faders, can you recall previous tracks and assign them to a particular fader?
For example how could I cross fade loop #2 with loop #9 (in the recording sequence)?

I think I'm gonna look around for a rental option, try it out for a month and see what it is it can do more practically / hands on.

My hunch is that if I want something as modular and intuitive as I have in mind, I'm probably gonna have to go the Ableton + M4L route and some dedicated midi device to go alongside. Buuuuuuuuut, y'know, I'm lazy...   :-[ (Just seems like a lot of stuff to learn / buy / get acquainted with, and during that time you're not exactly making music)

i have it since one day now so i've not tried out everything yet. but i think what you're looking for here is not possible with this machine.
what you get is 4 seperate loopers, each with a fader. so you can't assign tracks to faders or something. you choose a track to record on and then overdub on this track, or you choose another track to record, then, if you like, overdub on that and so on.
but what's on one track cannot be placed to another track.
records on CF card, and each card holds one set of tracks (so track 1-4 plus the stereo mixdown, each once). if you record a new set, the previous content of the card is overwritten, so it's advisable to have several cards at hand.

maybe someone who uses the 2880 for a longer time can give some more information here, since i'm not 100% sure about all possibilites yet.

i'm sort of confused by your question.. as there's not 9 loops..

but as haesslich said.. you have 4 loops and 4 volume sliders... each of the 4 loops, which can contain unlimited overdubs, has its volume controlled by a fader.

you can bounce tracks down to the MIXDOWN fader.. but i've never done this... but i believe you can "perform" a mixdown using the volume faders as you record any of the 1-4 loops down to the MIXDOWN loop.

but, again, i've never done this, so i've forgotten how it works.

I guess I didn't explain myself clearly enough. And now I understand how the machine works a little more as well. (Think overdub #9 instead.)

Thing is you have 4 loops or patterns with "x" amount of overdubs on each, but those overdubs are not considered or handled as tracks in their own rights. All the ingredients of a pattern or loop are bundled together in a bread of sorts and can't be treated or modulated or faded separately.

you're correct... overdubs are permanent... you can't undo or remove an overdub, it just gets added on top of the loop. so be careful! but that's all the fun.... if you want undo, just use a computer!

Depending on shipping costs from the UK, that sounds very reasonable.

I'll get back to you at the beginning of next week. (Probably in PM...)

gareth, have you seriously considered what ditching a looper pedal might do for your rep on this forum?  seriously??
