Surround plugins?
« on: August 06, 2010, 01:02:18 am »
Does anyone mix in surround (5.1)? If so, do you have any suggestions for surround-based plugins (Mac/Native)? Logic has a few things but not much. Waves has an old TDM set but there seems to be next to nothing that I've come across that's new and nothing that's really inventive. Any recommendations would be most welcome. Thanks. Stephen

I don't mix in 5.1 but it sounds like a great concept!

Unfortunately I can't think of anything other than the high-end TC and Eventide boxes for 5.1 effects, which are seriously pricey.  :( This is all from the top of my head though, there could be some great stuff out there. I think TC have got their stereo to 5.1 up-mix algorithm available for Powercore, but that is about it as far as I know (I'm not really up to date with all the latest stuff though).

I really hope you can find something though.  :)

what are you looking to do?  Logic really comes with the most "out of the box" surround stuff...but yeah it isn't a lot.   for more complex stuff it's pretty much straight to MaxMSP in my experience.

thanks for the replies (everyone!). That's fantastic about UHBIK, I didn't know them at all. Since Logic covers the basic surround options (as you said, Billy) compressor/limiter, delay, reverb, I was just looking for other options, filters, delays with more extreme options, more reverb possibilities. I have an exhibition opening this week with three different 5.1 pieces, one in each building (abandoned kilns in a park in Sydney) and I'm just trying to get more movement out of one of the pieces in particular. I've never learned Max, which would be a smart thing to know in this instance for sure. Again, thanks (and any other suggestions for future reference of course welcome)

just checking this out right now (a lil diligence), Logic's Delay Designer, and some of the flangers/chorus/phasers, have 5.1 settings. Delay Designer is pretty fun and definitely would gussy up yr surround image.

Thanks Billy. That's a really good reminder. I forget sometimes how nice Delay Designer is and I should definitely look into pushing the parameters and automation more through the surround mix.
