Mixer Suggestions?
« on: April 10, 2010, 09:49:50 pm »
Hello all,
I'm trying to find a good mixer for recording. Nothing too fancy, just something for my own personal use. Any suggestions?

Any specific needs, like channel count, sends, inserts, submixing, etc?

I have an Allen&Heath Zed14 which I quite like, but it may or may not suit you, depending.

I really have any specific needs, but as far as channel count goes, i just want an average amount. I don't want a huge studio mixer, but I don't want a really tiny one either.

I second the Zed14, I had no idea how shitty my Mackie of the same size sounded until i got the Allen&Heath.  The price is pretty competitive if i remember correctly.

what's your budget? on the cheaper end i'd go for one of those Allen & Heaths... for a bigger budget perhaps the Toft ATB series.

try to avoid anything with really shoddy workmanship...

a small mackie is always a reliable choice as well.

we've been also on a pursuit of a small mixer. budget is very tight. key goal for it is to be small and portable. 6-8 channels top.
would be great if it had faders and possibility to monitor each channel separately on headphones.
came up with three ideas so far:

soundcraft EPM6 or 8 - has channel monitoring feature I mentioned above and faders, don't know anything about the quality though
mackie 802 VLZ3
yamaha MG 8/2 CX

any insight on the above? or maybe any other suggestions?

I have a friend who uses a Soundcraft EPM8, he's spoken favourably of it. I had a look at it once, seemed sturdy, and it was nice having volume sliders rather than the knobs on the Mackie, felt less cramped.

I have a larger model of that Yamaha series and really like it.  not portable size like the model you mention.  clean sound and sturdy build.

thanks for input.

we will very likely end up getting LD systems LAX8D. Went to check it out today and it seems better built and better sounding than Soundcraft. Has volume faders we wanted + DSP and price the same. So I guess we'll go with that. It's bulky though and the knobs are kind of loose but in this price rage there is no point to complain I guess.

Has anyone any experience with LD System mixers? Any words of warning or appreciation maybe?
