It looks absolutely nuts! Finally something for us that is getting a bit envious of Abletons abilities, still don't want (or trust!) a computer in the music production.

There's also the +drive upgrade for MD UW! From 32 to 8000 samples is quite a leap. Hope it opens up for more realtime sampling memory as well.

It's amazing that they keep adding new hardware to the MD, upgrading OS and such. Getting close to ten years since the release! Not even is it actively supported, it's still the number one machine for what it does. It's my favourite box ever, so take this for what it's worth - a fan testemony.

You can even have different pattern lengths within a track!...Also the crossfading between patterns seems quite useful...

i need a decent looper and the 12k-club-entrance-card ehx 2880 is already 1/3 of an octatrack, which seems to be a valuable live-looper itself (without foot control though), so it might be worth having a look at.

me and elektron is a hate-vs-love relationship. on the love side, their instruments are well designed and built, and you can feel the hours of thinking they spent during development. on the hate side, elektron is like a hardware equivalent of ableton. it's like 90% of people producing 90% electronic music use the machinedrum (or ableton live), and 90% of these people produce absolutely replecable music (just like ableton users).
i want to avoid falling into the same scheme just because the possibilities of the machine leads me to there.

I'd rather blame the users for that and of course the use of presets. It surely take some discipline to avoid certain "workflow traps"...but...

The ehx 2880 is cool but I rather use it as a "capture" tool for main sections of tracks that I then quite often transfer to the computer.

Had a quick look at the octatrack, seems like a pretty deep machine, then I had a look at the price... wow. I simply would not be able to afford something like that but I guess I'd also think more than twice if I'd get/could afford a mac pro (same price range), so simply ignore my ramblings.

exactly!!! in my opinion the tools don't matter at all (one of the main reasons why i almost never buy any tools for music making). of course there are influences and tools that help to shape things to a certain degree, but i think it's possible to create your own musical language with any device or tool available.

I would need to play with something this thing for a few hours/days before I could commit to spending the $1500 on it.  It's a premium item and the demo vids I've found probably just scratch the surface of where I'd like to go with it.

I think the idea that any instrument or app can make you a listenable musician is hallucinatory.

so ;-) we have a consensus here - i'd formulate it this way:

tools are secondary for the music but influence the musician in the music-making process.

as far as the octatrack is concerned, i didn't see any video i liked that much actually. but i blame the input material for that, not the machine (in the end it's still a sampler).
