Using condenser mics with pedals
« on: August 13, 2012, 12:48:04 pm »
Hi all. I'm sure someone here has some experience with this:

I'm looking for a compact, minimal way to perform with just a few condenser mics, objects and pedals. At home this is no problem: I have mixer sends and a multi i/o audio interface, but these are too big to travel with.

Should just get a small mixer like a 402-VLZ3? Or is there an even smaller preamp option? Reamp box?

Thanks! Any recommendations would be helpful.

there are mic preamps in pedal format, like the tc voice tone series. starting at ~100€ with the voice tone T1, which offers phantom power+preamp+compression (might be usefull). output is XLR, so you'd need an adapter cable. not sure about the output's impedance though... i don't expect these preamps to be really good (but then: not worse than cheap mixer preamps)
so might be worth a try?

Thanks haesslich! Something like that is exactly what I want. I just need to find the right unit. This seems basically perfect: http://www.naiant.com/naiant/microphoneamplifiers.html. Too bad he's not shipping internationally right now :(

i remember to have read once that the tinybox was common among field recorders back in the days when many people recorded on MD and the devices had no mic preamps. might be a good option.

Excellent. I think I might have to see what can do about getting one.
