ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Looper - 2880 or Boomerang?
« on: September 21, 2010, 05:10:41 pm »

A question about the 2880 - when you start overdubbing, does it move to the next track atuomatically, or can you build (say) five layers on the first track, and then move on to track 2?

you can do either

in order to continue to overdub track 1:

hit new loop
hit record
perform your initial loop
hit record at the end-point of your loop
then hit record again and continue to overdub on the first track

otherwise you can record an initial loop and automatically go on to record on track 2 if you like as well:

hit new loop
hit record
perform your initial loop
hit play at the end-point of your loop (which the unit will then begin playing back your initial loop on track 1, while automatically switching to track two and continuing to record)

no problem - try out the m1 as well, it is also a humbucker style soundhole pickup

let me know how it all works out for you

i switched from a single coil to a fishman rare earth humbucker for noise reasons myself. good clean sound, but has become somewhat electric sounding to my ears over time (you might like it, especially mixed with a mic).

i would like to try to switch over to an under-saddle pickup for live performance eventually ... in my opinion they sound more acoustic than magnetic pickups (but that wouldn't really be swappable between guitars like you want). i have heard good things about the m1 by lr baggs - might be worth trying one out.

the cathedral, however, you have to physically keep holding down to keep the infinite reverb.. which is a little annoying!

wiring a switch in parallel with the existing foot switch is an easy mod around this limitation. this allows you to use the pedal as normal, or by flipping the switch to hold the drone.

i know i mentioned this earlier in a different post, but i finally went through with modifying my stereo memory man and cathedral (after the warranty was up)

however, a side effect is i did find out that only certain modes will hold the reverb for a good amount of time (the accu trails off in a matter of minutes despite holding down the infinite switch) regardless of the mod (i just never held the switch down that long before).

too bad i wasn't closer taylor (i am in mn), i'd mod your pedal for you - it is really straight forward.

it will be great to hear what some of you guys with the new freeze pedal come up with - i would like to hear it in action with a style of music i am interested in - i know i'll be picking one up eventually.

here is a link to the modification of the cathedral i mentioned (and stereo memory man):

hm, if anyone owns the cathedral and this new one,... I wonder how they compare in regards to the freeze function...

just a gentle bump - pre-orders for 'Of The Sea...' are filling up fast, so don't delay if you're interested in snagging a copy!

congratulations - and thanks for the heads up. really looking forward to this release.

Has anyone ever tried to use a Clavinet with an Ebow? I was thinking you could play the keys while using the Ebow with the other hand?...

Joe

i don't see why not

i know stephan mathieu uses ebows on his octave virginal http://www.bitsteam.de/wp/?page_id=28

David where can you get your hands on one of these Lap Harp's and how much do they tend to cost? .. Lovely piece by the way :)

thanks, but the piece posted in this thread was by marc -- although, i do have some works using lapharp as well http://www.davidandree.com/blog/?tag=lapharp

i have a "music maker" lap harp (picture here http://www.davidandree.com/blog/?p=181 )
its the bulgarian one puggo and mfischer have. i think "first act" makes a comparable one. i'd second taylor in scouring ebay for one - i think i got mine for like $10.

looks like we all have lapharps and ebows... too bad we all can't get together and have a lap harp jam session...

i've been messing around with a friend's ebow and a simple lap harp.  i am not much of an ebow on electric guitar fan but i am loving it on acoustic instruments.

wonderful piece, thanks for sharing/posting this. i enjoy the fumbling/handling noises in contrast to the carefully layered drones

It's expensive but if you wanted to keep the acoustic tone you could try one of the Fishman Aura pedals - http://www.fishman.com/products/details.asp?id=92 - I think I'm about to shell out on one as the piezo really does my head in.

not a bad idea - i suppose i should try one myself to find out for sure, but i remember researching those a while back and reviews were mixed - but many saying the imaging was not what they were hoping for / not a convincing acoustic tone

no substitute to a well mic'd acoustic

He like you thogh wasn't a big fan of the sound of that type of pick up. His solution was to use a recharageable battery that had a higher output. My understanding of this is very vague but it was something ilke a 10v output from a 9v battery. Did no harm to the unit and it certainly worked. He also suggested a compressor pedal to get things going in when using it amplified.

so i take it your friend was using an under-saddle pickup then?

thanks for posting the tips! it's appreciated - i'll have to look into the battery idea - i never thought of using a higher voltage battery, but i could see how that would help

the other thing that helps take the edge off of using magnetic pickups with an ebow is simple low pass filtering, just enough to dial out the really harsh/distorted higher frequencies.

I've just had the toggle switch mod done on my SMMH - it makes life a lot easier!

nice, did you do it yourself? it seems really straight forward - i just can't bring myself to do it while its still under warranty...

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / ebow + acoustic w/under-saddle pickup ...?
« on: January 10, 2010, 04:37:13 pm »
anyone here use this combination? just curious if you get a decent signal from the ebow through an under-saddle pickup...

i am considering picking up an under-saddle pickup (the fishman matrix infinity specifically) for use on one of my acoustics as i find magnetic pickups just sound too magnetic/electric to my ears for some applications, but im curious whether they play well with an ebow or not...

i now use an acoustic with an active humbucker in it and it works well, but as many of you know the sound is almost always aggressive/distorted when using an ebow with magnetic pickups. i love the sound you get off of an acoustic with an ebow without any pickups - more pure tones than when you use a magnetic pickup. i am hoping this is more the result you get with an undersaddle pickup, as live applications with the amplification necessary for condensers to pick up the sound of an ebow with an acoustic are difficult without heaps of feedback.

the cathedral.. yes, when i was in the UK last october i picked one
up. the infinite reverb is quite nice. it turns anything you put into
it into a drone... not bad :) i also like the spring reverb emulation
on it.

i'd recommend checking one out for sure.

the only drawback, though, is you have to press down the switch to
hold the reverb. as soon as you let go the reverb fades away. it can
get quite tiring to hold it down with your hand for 6 minutes :)

i have a cathedral and love infinite switch as well - i have a
workaround in my signal path to get around having to hold down the
footswitch...

when you are holding down the infinite switch, you can turn the reverb
all the way up (which essentially does the same thing as holding down
the switch) then you can release the footswitch and keep the
sustaining drone.

at this point you cannot play into the pedal anymore as any notes will
add to the reverb drone. to remedy this i place an ab switch before
the cathedral that effectively bypasses the unit and into a separate
input on the mixer. using this method allows you to then go back to
the cathedral to add to the drone as well throughout a piece.

...

the other option would be to solder a toggle to the momentary switch
like the modification you can do to the stereo memory man to get
around holding down its switch for looping as well... this mod
effectively gives you the ability to use the pedal as usual, or keep
the momentary switch held down (without have to give up a free hand or
foot to do it) i would love to get the courage to break out a
soldering iron on these two pedals...
