SELF PROMOTION / Orphax - Live at MFR HQ EP up for order right now
« on: April 03, 2013, 08:51:06 am »
Orphax – Live at MFR HQ is the first edition in a new series we are presenting called “The portrait series” in which an artist presents a new work which will be released as 3″ EP coming with a card with a picture of the artist on it (the portrait) send in a small envelope (which is part of the whole set).

For this release Orphax presents us the work recorded live at his performance at the Moving Furniture Records HQ on 17-11-2012.
The recording we get to hear is made with a build system in the software audiomulch that does not use sound input and generators. Instead it works with a feedback loop that creates a self-synthesized sound which gets manipulated with several effects.
The work is for Orphax a new direction in music where he tries to explore the possibilities of several minimal settings. The result on this release, unlike what we know from him, isn’t based around drones and field-recordings but is rather a form of digital noise that as easily could be considered minimalist music.

Hear a short remix of the release at SoundCloud

The 3″ CD-R is limited to 50.
This is MFR014

On October 23th, 2011 I performed live at the OCCII in Amsterdam, NL as opening act for Charalambides, Steve Gunn and others.

My intention was to do a set with throat singing, though due to a horrible pain in my throat for 2 weeks I couldn't practice. So instead I grabbed back to an older performance I did before.
What you hear here is 26 different frequency layers of my sounds which all get their moment throughout the piece.
In the source recording there are small variations, which change the sound continually, while the way the different layers are played bring a huge variation in the sound palette.
Because the way the sounds are reworked and played only in small fractions of the piece you can actually hear what the source is: my voice.

You can get the download at http://orphax.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-occii-october-23th-2011 for a donation of 1 euro

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Promotional Work
« on: November 16, 2010, 05:57:22 pm »
As this is something that has to do with labels as well I thought to start a topic about promotion of releases.
This is because so far I have been having a hard time to get magazines, blogs and such to review material I have released on my label and I guess I am not the only one.

Do you have special tricks?
Do you have certain contacts?
What are your thoughts about how some zines work with this?

And so and so on.

SELF PROMOTION / Rose & Sandy - Play Cat's Cradle Pre-Order
« on: October 20, 2010, 01:23:12 pm »
The debut album for the Scottish duo Rose & Sandy - play Cat's Cradle is now up for pre-order.

ABOUT THE PLAY CAT'S CRADLE

Listen to an excerpt: http://soundcloud.com/movingfurniturerecords/rose-and-sandy-play-cats-cradle-excerpt-from-forth-coming-album

I don't know exactly what the instrument is. It's probably a kind of zither; that's how my dad described it to me when he first told me about it.I was immediately fascinated by his description: a set of strings on the left side that was blocked into eleven chromatic 'chord banks', each adjustable between major, minor and suspended fourth via little levers at the front that literally tightened the string by a semitone; on the right, three octaves of notes backed by an image of a piano keyboard for guidance. When I finally set eyes on it, I was in love; it's a truly beautiful object, about three feet wide and two deep, with surprisingly detailed religious iconography inside each of the sound holes. And then there was the sound - like plucked piano strings, but with resonance that's amazing even for an acoustic instrument. A single note can hold for a couple of minutes if there's an adequate surfeit of background noise.

It came into my father's possession as a loan from some nuns he knew through his church work. I know. One older sister at the convent had played it at times of worship, but since she had passed away it wasn't used, so they wondered if he had a use for it. It was a kind of extended loan of the sort that often occurs in the weird system of quasi-ownership that persists in these circles. I hinted heavily until such time as the freehold drifted towards me.

I was told that the usual technique was to only pluck the melody on the right hand side and let the chords on the left thrum by themselves through vibration. It was a beguiling notion, and it does work, but there are so many other options, including prepared techniques, hitting notes in different ways, and adjusting which part of the string is struck, that I tended to run the whole gamut.

Every google search I've tried brings up similar-ish things, but nothing quite like this. It could be unique, but I doubt it; I'm guessing it's just a little obscure.

As soon as I heard it, I determined to collaborate with Rose on a project not dissimilar to his Accrual venture, whereby live instrumentation (guitar, in the case of Accrual) was used as the solitary sound source and processed live. All of the work you hear was created in two impromptu sessions where we agreed a key, hit record and just started playing. The only edits are start and end points, plus a splicing of each of the five pieces together to make a single track.

We've called it 'Cat's Cradle'. It represents a few different notions: Firstly, the many strings mirror the manifold web of twine used in the child's game of the same name; second, we've both become fathers in the recent past and I wanted to reflect the multitude of joy, worry and responsibility that "the cradle" brings; thirdly, there's the air of puzzle in much of my dealings with the instrument, be they of its origin or my (at times clumsy) playing. Imperfection and the sense of an ever-evolving process seemed to dominate its aura, so the naive complexity of the tactile folk game seemed to fit well.

I had originally done something vaguely along the lines of automatic writing for liner notes, whereby I just let me mind wonder as the music was played back in real-time, but it didn't chime too well. In the end, it could be summed up in one line:

"We pass the cradle back and forth. I hope I never make a mistake."

We hope that the sound could be recreated in a live environment, as that's essentially how it was created, but there's a drawback: somebody (i.e. me) will have to tune the 114 strings...

SELF PROMOTION / Ubeboet - Archival (OUT NOW)
« on: May 14, 2010, 07:36:06 am »
Finally Archival by Ubeboet has arrived. The record looks and sounds great even if I say so myself.

Ubeboet is the musical project of Miguel A. Tolosa from Madrid, Spain. On Archival, his first vinyl release, he knows to combine elements from drone-music, musique-concrete and popol vuh-esque krautrock, creating his own style of minimal music. The result is one of intense beauty.
The album is mastered by Rashad Becker at Dubplates & Mastering in Berlin (GER) and pressed at Record Industry in Haarlem (NL)

OTHER MUSIC / Does (minimal) ambient music need a new impulse?
« on: March 27, 2010, 06:22:03 am »
The last few weeks I have been wondering about somethings.

Although I think the music is in general a beautiful thing, a lot of modern (minimal) ambient musicians all tend to sound sort of the same.
It is as if that people want to sound like the music that is released on 12K (for example) or want to follow up on the success by an acts such as Celer and Chihei Hatakeyama.
Certain labels (and musicians) just release music that is always in this same vain without too much development. As if the creative process has stopped for these people and they learned a trick and they just repeat this.
Because of this their is a constant stream of nice music, but how much of this music do we really need?

Is the minimal ambient music in a sort of valley considering development? Does it need a new impulse?

I would love to hear/read your opinions about this subject. Or if I just don't get it please try to explain me... ;)
