Francisco Lopez & Lawrence English - HB (Baskura, 2009)
Giving it a try again. I have been having problems with getting in to this one since I got it, which is about a year ago I guess.
Can't seem to grab on to me, while other works by both artists actually does. Both Lopez as English have released great albums in the past.

I have to say, I really do like it, especially as a headphone disc

COMPUTER MUSIC / Re: free plug-ins
« on: March 25, 2010, 01:42:07 pm »
Came across this decent plug recently and been enjoying it immensely. Modest, GUI simplistic yet insane and powerful frq shift/echo plug-in. Give it a ride.

So what are your favorite free plug-ins? Share your findings and post your weapons of choice if you don't mind revealing your sound mangling tools.

Thanks for posting about the Valhalla and Variety of Sound plugins. I just demo'd the Vallhalla frequency shifter for a sophomore level sound class I'm teaching and set them off with a list of freeware to investigate. I use the Ableton Frequency Shifter all the time but this one has a really nice and different feel....Stephen

Stephen: I have a Revox A77 you're welcome to borrow for the event. I haven't used it in some time, but I just checked it, and it still turns on at least. It's the 3 3/4 - 7 1/2 ips version, not 7 1/2 - 15, but does support 10.5 inch reels, for which I have the adaptors.

What specifically do you need it for? I'm reasonably sure it will play back OK, but I'm not so sure about recording. I can test that if necessary.

Hi Richard, thank you! That's amazing. I'll ask Anthony and perhaps put him directly in touch with you? It's just straight playback of archival recordings. I'm sure he's not talking about recording. Let me know the best way for him to contact you and thanks again. Stephen   - (stephenvitiello@gmail.com)

thanks so much. I'll pass the word on for sure

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this, and hope no one minds my bringing it to the forum - Anthony Moore (of Slapp Happy and many other great things) is doing a very rare NY performance. He's looking for a reel to reel machine to use and asked if I could help put the word out. I realize it's a long-shot but if anyone has something, email me off-list (stephenvitiello@gmail.com) and I'll forward the note to Anthony. Thanks. Stephen     his note:

I am arriving with Martine in New York City April 2nd to play
a gig on the 7th at Le Poisson Rouge in Bleeker St. flying
back out on the 8th.

As the stuff to be presented is lifted from some late 60s
early 70s tape works of mine I am desperately trying to
locate a decent Revox A77 or some such for the show. I can't
for the life of me find one in NY and of course nobody has a
spare cent for supporting the concert with any kind of
budget. Do you happen to know where I might borrow one for a
coupla days?

me too -- I have the previous Ultralite and find it to be very reliable. Stephen

SELF PROMOTION / Re: Steve Roden and Stephen Vitiello concert on ubu.com
« on: January 21, 2010, 05:32:40 pm »
ooh nice, cheers stephen.
I guess the mix was sent outside to the audience via external PA or something?

Thanks Jimmy! The space has about a 6-second reverb and it's different in every part of the building. Sound bounces off the sculptures, the glass walls and fades in all sorts of weird fun ways. Steve and I were each sending stereo outputs direct and then there were about 14 microphones all throughout the building picking up our sound played back into the space. Bob Bielecki, our brilliant sound engineer was outside, with the audience, mixing between those channels. So, the audience was hearing all sorts of changes in the spatialization as Bob made various decisions. For the stereo mix (on Ubu) I had 18 individual channels to play with  - emphasizing the ambient mics in particular when  Steve is singing or hitting a bell as he's wandering through the building and only picked up by the ambient mics. ...

There's a nice recording of a performance and soundcheck that Steve and I did at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX 2007. Link is:

Hope some of you can check it out. Stephen

checking it out.....right.........now

thanks Billy! Really hope you enjoy it. It was an amazing experience for us. Always hard to know how much it translates through live recording but imagine the desert around you, buzzing insects and a snake going by...

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Miking Piano Strings?
« on: January 19, 2010, 02:31:32 pm »
I wonder about using a guitar pickup too? There's a David Behrman feedback piece that uses guitar pickups underneath the piano strings which was beautifully performed at The Kitchen a few years ago. Also, I've never used this, but it is a kind of contact mic that I believe has been used on piano:
