COMPUTER MUSIC / performing via SKYPE
« on: July 12, 2012, 04:39:07 pm »
Has anyone performed using Skype, routing through a DAW? I had a failed attempt today and wonder what I was doing wrong. I had a session open in Ableton (tried Logic as well). I had a mic patched in to the Live session (via RME 400) and the audience could hear that but they couldn't hear my any of the files I was playing back or any of the sounds through the other inputs (guitar, processing...). I could hear everything in my session and I could hear the people on the other side who I was meant to be playing with. I had the RME set for input and output in all the usual control panels and preference settings. I ended up just playing guitar, straight into the computer but none of the other formats worked. It seems like it should have been simple but never was...

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: small portable mixing desk
« on: April 06, 2012, 11:19:15 am »
didn't know wether i should put this in "synthesizer" board or this one. but here goes;

i'm looking for a small, sturdy, portable mixing desk that travels easily. it needs to have at the very least 4 (mono)jack inputs and possibilites for XLR / RCA as well. most importantly, it has to work well with sends. preferably 2. and especially pre-fader.

right now i have this old yamaha mg10/2 which would have been perfect, though it sends are always distorted. it seems like the sends knobs are way too sensitive, it's practically useless. since i was planning on getting a second mixer anyway, it is of less importance. - if the mixer has good pre-amps i'm twice as happy.

i know i could google all this, but figured that the 12k peeps probably have the best answer. :)

If you only need 4-channels, the littlest Mackie would work, don't you think?

Plenty different indeed, I wonder sometimes if things weren't so readily available and easy to use, would I be doing the legwork and experimentation to get there? If you guys know of a book re: history of the studio as a musical instrument, I'd be very interested. You catch bits and pieces of information left and right, but a comprehensive synthesis would be nice.

*What are you listening to?*
I've been on a gipsy guitar spree: Django, Stochelo Rosenberg, Dorado Shmidt, Bireli Lagrène, Stephane Wrembel, etc.

Do you subscribe to Tape Op? http://tapeop.com/survey/us/renew/33812/
If you're in the States, it's free! And nothing comes close it.

There's also a book of some of their best articles:

Tape Op: The Book About Creative Music Recording [Paperback]
Larry Crane (Author), Tony Visconti (Author)

I haven't picked it up but I love the magazine too

well I'm OK if you play loud bc I have excellent hearing protection.  it's a fun space (has a bar!).

are you playing at the Presents Gallery?  that's the only venue I've got tabs on in Ft Greene....
I just heard we've been moved to the upstairs space, so reportedly (?) quieter and more enclosed. The March show is at Presents Gallery. Have you played there? I haven't been there but sounds OK on paper

hahhaha Pianos.  you better crank it up if you want to be heard over the bands and crowd.

see you there, lower east side cool kids.
I'm worried about that but hoping we can harmonize with the space and the crowds. We're also playing in Fort Greene on March 10 in what sounds like a much quieter space...

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Travel guitars
« on: December 31, 2011, 07:20:32 pm »
If I'm not mistaken, I think Christopher Willits uses this one or a similar model, perhaps you can ask him impressions...

I play more acoustic guitar personally, a friend has a Taylor lighter bodied / smaller model made especially for travel, and meanwhile you can find a bunch of those by other makers, I was really taken aback by how little compromise there is in the sound with this one.

thanks! Long ago, I had a little Martin Backpacker. I could never get into it. I've heard the Baby Taylor gtrs are more substantial

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Travel guitars
« on: December 31, 2011, 06:45:20 pm »
Is anyone using any sort of travel guitar? I was looking at this thing:
http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EscapeEG1MH/
It doesn't look as dorky as the Steinberg guitars of yesteryear. I just wonder what it sounds like.
Thanks. Happy new yEar all around. Stephen
