There seems to be long gaps of absence and then they drop two or three CDs at once.  Seems like I've had the same thought on several occasions.

yeah, I know, but here even their website totally vanished since a couple of months now... strange

I love this kind of questioning about the usual habitability codes, must be such a nice living experience...or maybe not ?

their website doesn't work, since sometime before the dramatic events in japan. Does somebody knows something about it ?
I'd be very sad to see another beautiful label disappear  :-[ :-[

I found the second piece is so simple, but mind-blowing

Yes, the PCM-M10 records in MP3 up to 44.10 kHz / 320 kbps or WAV up to 96kHz / 24 bit

considering you posted the link to wingfield audio, you probably saw these audio sample comparison, but I repost the link anyway because I think they're pretty instructive and not directly accessible through the page you mentioned (they also cover other devices including the Sony M10):

http://www.wingfieldaudio.com/portable-recorder-noise.html#samples
http://www.wingfieldaudio.com/portable-recorder-sound-samples.html

If you listen on a good audio system, on the first page (floor noise), in the first column (internal mike test) consider how clear both sony sounds compared to the tascams (especially to the DR-07, the DR-1 and DR-100 being gradually better). The worst I think is the fostex FR2-LE

I must admit the 2nd column (mike input / dynamic) is not very convincing for the M10 (very noticeable hum), but it's not very good for the tascam either. I don't own a dynamic mike, but with a condenser one it's a whole different story I think.

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: Ground loop!...

I still think the USB's on the Mac are the real villain!

You're not alone with this, I also had trouble with powered usb hubs before, and even with the native usb and firewire ports on my previous macbook pro before it starts to make random saw noises through my fireface and finally dies completely (motherboard is fried apparently) >:( it just won't start anymore.

I hope you're not on that path !

Could I ask why you went for the PCM-10 over the PCM-50, was it simply an issue of price?

Yes, I was tempted by the PCM-50 as well but, considering it was a gift, price was one the main reasons  ;)

but beside that, I liked the ultra small size & portability of the M10, I like to have it in my pocket while recording like a spy with my in-ear binaural mics  ;D, I didn't want to have a setup like : the recorder + an external battery + an XLR adapter + a mic preamp +...+...etc...

The built-in omni mics are probably not comparable to the condenser mics included with the D50, but this wasn't such an issue for me, because I have the Rode when I want to make a good quality directional recording (and I mainly use the binaural mics). Built-in mics are pretty good for ambient recording tho, and I used them a lot already (indoors or without wind). So all in all it gives me enough options for different situations.

I also think the price for the XLR adapter is waaay too much for the D50, almost the price of the unit itself !

So, since my last post in august, I got the sony PCM-M10 and can't rave enough about it !!
It's ultra portable, has a otherworldly battery life. I'm using my *second* set of AA batteries since august, and recorded more than 8Gb of material with it at the best quality settings, with (almost always) monitoring  and re-listening the recordings sometimes several times - it is just unbelievable !

Sound quality is top notch, it compares easily with or even surpasses my previous korg MR-1, and I can use either the built-in mics (pretty good but very wind-sensitive) or plug directly my self-powered rode NT4, or my binaural in-ears mic (with plug-in power). No need for XLR in my case.

Before buying, I was also tempted by the Tascam DR-100 as well, but the sound samples I found on the net were nowhere close to those from the sony, with a LOT more floor noise. The Sony is crystal clear. I was also a bit discouraged by some bad reviews of the Tascam, but I can't put my hand on these links right now, I'll post these if I find them back.

The PCM-M10 also has a very cool 5 sec pre-rec buffer function. That means, with this activated, the recording starts actually 5 sec *before* the moment you press the button. Cool for recording intermittent noises.

I also used the links you posted, but they haven't been updated for a while.

For my researches, I found the taperssection forums have a lot of useful info about everything related to field recording : http://www.taperssection.com/

hope that helps a bit
