and also sad to see some other people already taking advantage of the situation for their own profit (traders, speculators, etc...)

yes, the greed and cynicism of the Wall St. gang never lets up.
speculating on drops in Japanese shares, which in turn drives those prices even lower, is especially low.

hope everyone is keeping safe over there.
can't help but be struck by how dignified the Japanese are in the face of such a disaster too.

the oldest thing I own is a Yamaha DX21 synth but it's in the attic!
recently upgraded my old pc from 2003 with XP to a newer i7 pc and win7 so I'm feeling all modern these days.

heh I upgraded to Win 7recently and spent about half an hour the other night trying to figure out how to show jpegs as previews in a folder.
felt like a right noob.

it's been a long time since I felt like I needed to upgrade my music software because I felt limited by what I had.
I've been using basically the same tools for years and if I feel I'm struggling with my music, then my compositional approaches are usually where I'll look to improve things first.
life is too short to be wading through manuals and help forums when there's music to be made.

12K + LINE / Giuseppe Ielasi in the Wire (Jan 2011)

delighted to see one of my fave musicians get a 3 page feature in this months Wire mag.
for someone who seems to keep a fairly low profile, it's good to see him get some well deserved props in the media.
haven't read it yet, but I'll be settling down in front of the fire with it later on with a nice cup of tea and some mince pies.

I meant the newspapers, like the Guardian etc.
the kind of journos whose idea of leftfield is listening to a franz ferdinand 7".
the wire isn't perfect but there aren't many other hardcopy mags out there that cover so many niche sounds.

read the review last night.
to be fair to penman, he seemed more exasperated with the album than anything else.
there's obviously a lot of respect there.
funnily enough, it really made me want to hear it too.

he's right about eno not doing anything good since the 70s though.
I think the arty press in the UK are always too quick to hold him up as some sort of leftfield icon though, which is tiresome, as there's so many more interesting artists out there.

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Re: Facebook

i agree with the above. since setting up my facebook page i really have no interest whatsoever to update it and, frankly, sort of want to shut it down 2 weeks after setting it up.

lol yeah I know what you mean.
I don't think facebook is the kind of thing that people use to discover new music or anything but it has its uses.

i am a facebook junkie...
But would love to see all those musicians and labels get pages instead of profiles but a lot of them use their profile as promotional tool so that's why I add them. Others I have added just because they seem like great people to me who I want to be in touch with.

that's the problem though, I don't think you can have a page without having a profile too, so it gets confusing.
I've different people who are 'friends' with my profile and 'fans' who liked my page, and I never know if I should update both and if that means some people get double posts.

yeah you might be right taylor!
I hardly ever post on my profile, hadn't gone near it for months til recently.
it's handy for seeing what everyone else is up to though.

how did you get rid of the numbers in your page url?
can you edit it?

I noticed Taylor is having the same grief with regards facebook pages vs profiles.
I've always found this really confusing and annoying.
I'd rather be directing people to my artist page but most seem to just connect with my profile page.
I'm never sure which one to update with what and which people see what I post.

I'd just like to keep a profile page for people I know but still be able to get updates from them.
Also there doesn't seem to be a any way of friends even knowing I have a page from my profile, there's no links apparent anywhere.
Do I just keep sending messages to friends to like my pages or something?
I hate thinking I'm spamming folk all the time, but what to do?
I wish my profile url was my page url but probably too late for that as it wont let you change anything :(

Anyone got any good tips with regards all this confusion!?

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Re: CDs are dead (almost)
« on: November 27, 2010, 05:21:14 pm »
I remember a similar discussion on the old board when Taylor wound up term, about the ins and outs of free music.
I guess things are even harder for small labels now.
The writing has been on the wall for CDs for a few years now I fear.
I think they'll still be around for a while in niche music circles for those who appreciate the physical art/object, a bit like vinyl and cassettes are now.
I'm not a big fan of cassettes, some younger folk may like the novelty aspect but I remember them too well, to ever want to go back there.

Getting small runs of CDs done in the future could be an issue if a lot of duplicating plants close down. It's already hard enough to just get a run of 200/300 without paying stupid money.
Anyone selling 500 CDs worth of experimental music these days is doing well, and all the labels who have managed to keep things going over the past few years deserve a lot of respect.
