SELF PROMOTION / New Radere album on Futuresequence
« on: January 25, 2012, 03:48:54 pm »

I’m pleased to announce that my latest release, I’ll Make You Quiet, is out today on Futuresequence. The album marks the label’s inaugural release, and is available for purchase directly from their Bandcamp. You can also pick it up at either Stashed Goods or Experimedia, if you feel so inclined.

From the label:

The iconic rock formations of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are home to experimental artist Carl Ritger. A far cry from his hometown of Philadelphia, their impressively cinematic yet naturally rugged presence has exerted an influence on the artist in the relatively short time he has lived there. His fourth full-length album as Radere, I’ll Make You Quiet, narrates the scission of emotion generated from moving to new surroundings, a sense of wonderment and intimidation of being in the shadow of the mountains’ grand spectacle whilst intrinsically drawing on the melancholic loss of the past.

To date, Carl has primarily concerned himself with the creation of long-form textured drones. Releases like Maple Drip (Rural Colours), A Season In Decline (Full Spectrum Records) and Lost At Sea, I’m Never Coming Back (Basic Sounds) have all possessed an unraveling nature, unrestricted and formless by definition. I’ll Make You Quiet upsets this rhythm, setting clearly defined boundaries around individual tracks. The result is Carl’s most complete work to date, a leap forward in aesthetic maturity; the manifestation of an accomplished artist who has reached a summit in their career.

Creating a majestic sculptural architecture, given depth and life through his skillful ability to layer worn and distorted sound in moving patterns, Carl also weaves found sounds into the mix. Recordings of a set of house keys, an electric toothbrush and a tape recording of a flock of crows all make their way into these arrangements, as well as his signature processed guitar and electronics. Each track on the album was recorded primarily in single-take sessions, an intimate approach that reflects Carl’s interest with the unpredictable; sounds created out of chance, and an embrace of the temperamental nature of analog tape rather than digitally rendered files.

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / EHX H.O.G.
« on: July 30, 2011, 08:07:00 pm »
Just picked up one of these bad boys earlier in the week. So far, I'm in love. Just curious if anyone else on here had one of these units and might have some friendly tips or suggestions?

Thus far, I'm using it mostly in Step Bend mode and utilizing the envelope section to effectively erase my attack.

Harmonic drones for days!

COMPUTER MUSIC / Maschine?
« on: March 30, 2011, 04:53:49 pm »
Just curious if anyone out there has been using Native Instrument's Maschine for production and/or performance? It looks like a great piece of kit...but there's not a heck of a lot of info out there for artists who are working with more abstract sounds!  ;)

Anyone have any experience with it yet?

SELF PROMOTION / A Process In The Weather Of The Heart
« on: March 07, 2010, 09:35:29 pm »
Full Spectrum records, a young label based out of Greensboro, NC, has just released the digital version of my debut full-length release, A Process In The Weather Of The Heart, via Bandcamp: http://fullspectrumrecords.bandcamp.com/album/a-process-in-the-weather-of-the-heart.

From the press sheet:

Pieced together over a period of several months, A Process In The Weather Of The Heart is the end result of dozens of live performances and countless hours of tinkering in the studio, fusing Ritger's ambient guitar playing style with his interest in processed field recordings. Imbued with a distinctly aleatoric sensibility, there's no denying that Ritger fully embraces a sense of "randomness" in his work, but this controlled unpredictability has always been an integral component of his compositional process, as generative processes are given equal status alongside tried and true compositional techniques. The end result is an organic hybrid of the traditional and avant-garde, hand-played versus computer-assisted, digital versus analog and pre-determined versus random; a 40-minute travelogue of where the Radere project has been and where it is headed, A Process... ultimately serves as a flickering snapshot of a heady period during Ritger's evolution as a sound artist.

The album is available now as a digital download in a variety of formats for a base price of $5, but for those who prefer physical media, we'll have a properly pressed CD version available for order by the end of the month.

Also, keep an eye out for a forthcoming EP release on Hibernate and another album out on Install later this year!  :o

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Absynth patches?
« on: January 11, 2010, 10:45:27 pm »
Anyone have any Absynth patches they'd be willing to share? I can post some later when I'm around my home computer...I've been building patches out of field recordings and guitar samples, rather than square/sine/triangle/whatever waves. Very interesting results!

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Traveling tips?
« on: January 11, 2010, 03:39:04 pm »
I wasn't really 100% sure where to post this, so I figured this is as good a place as any! I'm going to be doing some traveling this year, and I was curious if any of you had tips on traveling with your musical gear. I'm planning on having my guitar (a Fender Telecaster), a few pedals, soundcard and laptop. Obviously, I'd like to avoid checking any of it!  :-\

If anyone has any recommendations for gear bags (this M-Audio bag has potential, but is just slightly too large), etc...please let me know. Ideally, I'd be able to carry on the guitar in its case and the rest of the gear in my "personal" bag, and then check my clothes and such.

Thoughts?

SELF PROMOTION / PHILADELPHIA: Rizumu presents Anticipate Recordings
« on: January 06, 2010, 10:12:56 am »
This night has been a long time in coming, but we've finally managed to get an event set up with Ezekiel Honig. If you live near Philly (or even NYC, for that matter) you should definitely come down to check this out. We're holding the party at a building that used to literally be a Denture Factory, but has since been converted into lofts. It's an incredible space, and there's going to be some phenomenal music going on.

If you do end up coming from out of town, let me know. I have plenty of space in my living room, but if that doesn't work out I'm sure we can get you set up elsewhere. You'll find we Philadelphians are a generous folk, not necessarily the ultra-violent, cheesesteak grubbin' types you see so often on the news!  ;)

Rizumu presents Anticipate Recordings
Ezekiel Honig Anticipate/Microcosm
Thomas Hildebrand Microcosm
Color Is Luxury feat. Buchla synth legend Charles Cohen
Radere Full Spectrum/Install Sound
D. Elias Tinker Aesop Collective
John Schenk Rizumu

1/29/10 :: Music starts at 9:00pm sharp :: $10

The Denture Factory
501 N. 32nd Street
Philadelphia, PA 19104

I'll add more details as they become available!

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Behringer Ultra-G GI100 DI?
« on: January 03, 2010, 08:23:38 pm »
Soooo...I know there was a thread about this on the old forum, but that's obviously not accessible anymore. Regardless, I'm in the market for a solid DI box for running my guitar into my soundcard (for both live and studio applications). I was curious if anyone had any experience with Behringer's Ultra-G GI100 unit, or, alternatively, if anyone had any solid recommendations on other units?

OTHER MUSIC / What are you listening to?
« on: January 03, 2010, 10:30:49 am »
Ye olden thread of auditory goodness, back again for all of our listening pleasure!  ;D

Currently giving William Basinski's Vivian & Ondine a spin. So far, I'm liking it very much, though it's not quite as solid as 92982.
