OTHER MUSIC / Re: Any electroacoustic, acousmatic composers?
« on: January 31, 2012, 04:37:23 am »
Same for Horacio Vaggione I guess.

I have a hard time coining or defining what constitutes acousmatic composition. To an extent a lot of the people posting here can fit in an enlarged conception and more contemporary view of musique concrète, no?

Thanks again for all your feedbacks and... I agree about your comment on the possible definition(s) of what acousmatic could be... I am not that concern about definitions or "labels"... What I am trying to find out is information about people working with Ableton (or simmilar commercial electronic tools) who are not in the dance, ambient or field recording thing (since there are so many of them out there). The example of Morton Subotnik was a good one!
I will check about your suggestions. Thanks!

Thanks! I will check your feedbacks and get back with more info if I find something interesting.

OTHER MUSIC / Any electroacoustic, acousmatic composers?
« on: January 27, 2012, 07:08:25 am »
Hi! First of all I want to wish good luck and a happy and creative new year to everybody.

Second, I wonder if some of you guys know about electroacoustic, acousmatic, etc. composers using Ableton Live and other softwares as a main tool for their work. Do you know any composers in the line of Ligeti, Riley, Penderecki, Reich, etc. using modern software tools? I have been researching on my own and haven't been very successful... Cheers!

SELF PROMOTION / ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ: Two Random Based Soundscpes
« on: March 10, 2011, 03:19:22 pm »
I have posted two new glitching, random, ambient soundscapes at my sonic blog. http://www.quiltsuns.blogspot.com
These pieces were generated as the results of 8 random glitch generators. The sonic results depend on the audio files you feed them. So, every time you play with them, the soundscape is different in texture, rhythm and density.
I hope you have the time to enjoy them. If you like the stuff and are intrigued by my approach, please ask any question you may have. Cheers!

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: Scale, chords, tempo & time signature.

I usually have two acoustic guitars with alternative tunings. There is more adventure when you don't know exactly what is going to sound next. I think Joni Mitchell is one of my favorite inspirations for this kind of stuff: http://jonimitchell.com/music/tuningpatterns.cfm

The other technique I have found very enjoyable is generating music (with any generative device you may want) in a given tonality and making a generator to include sparse notes out of tonality. It breaks the normal flow of the music and make it sound a bit weird but at the same time gives more life to the generative process...

Nice Jorgensen! By the way, your web page link in your profile does not  work...

PS I forgot to talk about about a Casio PG310 midi guitar, bought second hand in1992... Grat o give more expression to soft synths!

OTHER MUSIC / Re: What to look for in a label?

Oops! It seems nobody wants to throw the first stone!

It is very good and brave question, specially in these times of change and challenge. I can not give any advice though. I am following my own strategy trying to develop personal relationships with my "clients" and I am not very sure if it is going to work at all... So, com'on guys share some wisdom here! Funny stories are welcome too!!!

Thank you NQ! I'll do as you say.

Tambourine Therapy isn't a familiar name. It sounds very....therapeutic. What is it all about?

I completely made it up! But the idea is that you try to focus in the simplest instrument you may have and get rid of the rest (for a while). Like going on vacations! I always have found that the most inspiring artistic technique for me is "boredom". It is in the void when you can hear new things. Minimalism is much about that I think.
I was really pissed off the first time I used Ableton: I hated it (I was using Sonar at the time). It is really a different approach. Now I see it as a huge toolbox for making trillions of different musical instruments, apart from recording, producing, djing... last year I quitted trying to be updated for updating's sake! I still study new software (manuals) because I love it. It is like reading Sci-Fi but now I only do it in my (little) spare time. I realized that what I wanted/needed is to have the everyday adventure of composing with any source of sound available: the important thing is the adventure of the unknown... thats why I like generative and random processes too! So, be happy, you are never going to be bored, but do not eat all the candies they offer you: you will loose you teeth! ;-)

Markov chains are nice tools for randomization.
Thanks for the info. I checked your site and downloaded the Markov application you made (thanks again!) But I am kind of a nerd and couldn't make it work with Ableton (running in iMac  10.6.5) Any tip?

Why are you, billygomberg missing Spectral Delay? Is it a matter of the OS you use? I thought the program was still around...

I forgot to mention that I have been lately in the process of recovering some old pieces of music I recorded in Cakewalk starting in 1997 and putting them in Ableton. It is really interesting what you can do with your old ideas and the new tools. Kind of having a cell with the DNA and bringing dinosaurs back to life! ;-)
Before that, I started programing music for some performances and art installations with a small sequencer Yamaha QY10. I remember using it connected to a midi guitar! I don't know were it can be now :-(

Anyway I am enjoying this kind of anthropological, archeological thread. Thank you guys for your inputs!
