FIELD RECORDING / Norway / Field Recording
« on: July 08, 2011, 11:27:30 am »
Next week I'm going to go to Norway for a 2 month-journey. Has anybody been there to take some field recordings yet? I've been there several times but not for field recordings. Any ideas about great places to record?
Thanks!

Thanks for the cool replies. I was experimenting with some acoustic guitars and voice droning together in very much reverb. I looped them and put some Audiobulb Ambient Reverb on it. And yeah berger, I invited my younger cousin (13 years old) to sing something and he was really inspired. sounded like an arabic piece of vocal or so.

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Generally talking about soundscapes

Maybe you'll find it boring. I just wanted to bring that thing up, 'cause I'm curious and apparently, nobody's done that yet.

I'm just listening to Tomasz Bednarczyk's Let's Make... which brought me to the subject of sound textures, just like Tomasz used for this album.
I would like to know how YOU create such pure soundscapes (minimalistic drone textures)
Have you ever experienced something very special, totally unexpected with unusual instruments or effects apart from the normal guitar/volume pedal/vst thing?

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Taking the electric plunge...

i'm kind of satisfied with my 60ies framus guitar. their sound is way overdriven and noisy, but they have something unique and what is interesting for you: i use it for ambient pads and they sound extremely organic and lively (but that's from my side, many of you would probably not agree :)). framus guitars (at least around here) are pretty easy to get and also very cheap in most cases (at least if you find a good dealer :)).

a similar one to mine, extreme fun imo, and i'm also beginner

Yes, I think without this reply I would have underestimated this.. thanks Taylor :) I'll try to get some information about that mic placement thing on the web before inviting the musicians as well as I'll take a lot of time for the actual placement. Thanks!

I have a very old (like 100 years old) banjo from Brighton (GB), sounds pretty interesting :D

thanks to both of you and sorry for the late answer! I'll definitely try to install two nt4's taking two very long cables to get the center room recorded by the zoom h4n and the stereo spread by the both nt4's. thank you. :)

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Something like a drone recording
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:41:26 pm »
I have a new project in which I try to compose music to give it to people who would play it then. My aim is to create some decent waves of drone, very quiet and still intoxicating. I would like to record horns, strings and choirs.
Has anyone of you done something similar yet? How did you record such a session? I'm not sure how to do it. I don't need it to be ultra high-quality, but still good enough to be clear and surrounding while listening. I don't know which microphone(s) to take and I think it's quite dull to organise such a session and to come on just with my Rode NT4 and a Handy Recorder.
What do you think would be best?
thanks!
marc

I always recommend the same but there's one thing. GRM tools. It's great for live use, imo.
