SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: teenage engineering OP-1
« on: May 31, 2012, 01:09:05 am »
the soundengine has some flaws, like being easy to clip etc.. also i find that e.g. the fm engine is hard to use for me, because the ui is quite cryptical, compared to the other engines.
i use the op-1 for both, live and studio work. in a live context i make use of nearly everything: drumsampler, synths and tape with prerecorded athmos. i considered using the tape as a live looper, but the ehx2880 just outperforms the op-1 tape...
in studio i use the sequencers and the one or the other lo-fi sound.

i must admit that after a few weeks, the machine lost some of it's glamour. but what remains is what it is: a powerful collection of features packed in a handy and beautiful box. though it does not sound really good (it's still not an access virus ; edit: or any other modern VA, i'm not advertising here ..), i absolutely love it.

ordered from you,  on the 17th of april. 3 weeks is not unusual, though. sometimes i think customs officers here in germany listen to all the cd's a few times before they proceed in the process ;-)

Hilary Hahn & Hauschka - Silfra

i don't like hilary hahn (but still, she _can_ play). but i adore hauschka. and this a beautiful record. it's a bit less on the experimental side than hauschka & hildur gudnadottir cooperation from last year.

That evening was pretty good!

SELF PROMOTION / florian von ameln - textures (ltd. ed. cd-r)
« on: April 22, 2012, 05:33:48 am »
Hey folks!
i'm proud to announce the release of my first album textures.
it features 10 tracks, rather droney and minimal, with a slight lo-fi touch. those who enjoyed the sequence 3 compilation might be familiar with one of the songs already.
textures is released in an edition of 50 CD-R's, delivered in a hand stamped cardboard case.
the artwork was developed by a.-m. lueck, a young photographer from Nuremberg, germany.
textures was mastered by rafael anton irisarri.

you can stream it, and if you like it, order on my bandcamp page: http://ab-arts.bandcamp.com/album/textures
it's 9€ + shipping, but I give a 10% discount for 12k forum members in the next four weeks, so 8.10€ + shipping for you. the discount key is: ecdysis (which is the current state of my left hand's skin ;-) )
also shipping for 12k forum members starts already now.
if you prefer non-bandcamp purchase contact me via florian _at_ ab-arts.de

spread the word, thanks a lot!

edit: forgot to set it from "pre-order" to "release"... fixed this now :)

only one week to go, my fellow frankonians and visitors of frankionia.

i broke my left pinkie finger, so i won't play guitar as announced. instead i'll play some slightly more synth oriented pieces.

COMPUTER MUSIC / Re: 24 bit sample rates
« on: April 17, 2012, 01:32:47 am »
my advice would be finish working on active projects at 16bit, but set up new projects at 24bit exclusively.
the main point in the process where you gain from 24bit is the recording process, anyway. the mixing and processing in the DAW depends on the DAWs precision, and current DAWs have an internal precision of 32bit float or 64bit float. you could export mixdowns in 24bit (even when 16bit recordings have been used). but i have the impression that mastering engineers like to get the mixes in whatever format they've been recorded natively.
converting existing recordings in a project from 16bit to 24bit won't change that much, i fear.

but for new projects, with new recordings, you can truly benefit from the extended resolution of 24bit.

sidenote: if you record carefully (with appropriate levels etc.) the difference between 16bit and 24bit won't be huge unless the signal is very dynamic.

ART / Re: watching

speaking of series with controversial endings:
i just finished the sopranos.
what to say? thumbs up!

i think i'm done with drama series now for a while. i watched six feet under before watching the sopranos, and started breaking bad recently, but after now i'm lusting for something more trivial ;)

thanks to blue ray dvds are fairly cheap...
