OTHER MUSIC / Re: What are you listening to?

you are really. really. bad people!
reading this thread regularly makes me spend even more money on records and cds.  ::)

at least the MD formfactor is/was convenient, but the audio is coded with a lossy, proprietary ATRAC-3 codec. i don't trust codecs i don't understand ;-)
in my opinion, the market has to offer one non-lossy audio format. i cannot tell exactly why, but it's my deep belief.

i don't think the cd drives and players will vanish completely that fast. it makes absolutely sense to leave them out of some new computers, since they're not needed that much any more. the fact that apple is the first or the most radical one to do so does have, however, a different reason: while other manufacturers replaced cd by dvd and are now replacing dvd by blue ray (which can play audio cd as well as far as i know), apple does not. there's a licensing issue with the blue ray standard, so apple hardware can not, as far as i know, play back video blue ray discs. i think apple tries to oppress the users crying for blue ray by marketing the loss of a optical disk player as a step forward in product development.

However other manufacturers will follow. There's a need for slimmer and lighter notebooks. But i think there'll be the option to get an external drive for a long time. Even today you can easily get a usb 3.5" diskette drive.

it's maybe not my favorite location, BUT i had a great field-recording night when i once returned from a party (in the city i was studying back then). it was 3 at night and i was drunk. actually, i told myself, if i'd go home straight, i'd probably not sleep anyway, so i decided to turn on my recorder (which i have with me quite often) and search the city for sounds.
cities, especially the ones that DO sleep at night, sound absolutely different than during daytime. primary there's the absence of cars, that lets you hear sounds you'd not hear at day. harmonically vibrating air conditioning units for example. and i was lucky that church bells of the dome in that particular city are allowed be sound at night.

the bad thing is that i was unexperienced (and i still am) in recordings. how long to record, how to adjust the device etc. + i was easily distracted (because of the rest of alcohol in my blood). recordings were not perfect, but the happening and perception was great fun.

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Recommend me a reverb unit
« on: February 16, 2011, 03:56:54 am »
i cannot recommend this - since it's still not available yet. but it might be worth waiting for it:
the eventide space pedal.
the demos on eventides website are crap but i'm confident that this pedal will be as good as it's brothers from the series.

12K + LINE / Re: LINE LABEL RE-LAUNCHED

this is indeed in the works as we speak for the 12k shop...

it was supposed to be launched with the new releases but the programmer is delayed.. but, to give you an idea of what's in store for the new online shop:

- users will create accounts, locations stored, no more having to run a "USA" shop and an "international" shop.
- instant, free MP3 downloads with the purchase of CDs
- flac and MP3 files will be available for sale
- coupon code system will be in place so i can offer sales, bonuses, incentives, etc.
- paypal will still be the payment method as it's just too expensive to use a true credit card system still

should be cool.. i'm certainly looking forward to seeing it happen.. i've already encoded all the music as flac and 320kbps mp3

(taylor)

excellent! this is awesome news!
just wanted to mention that you're already running one of the fastest shops i've ever bought at; usually it took only one week from order to delivery to germany. but with instant mp3 access after purchase i might end in some impulsive-buying!

i try to buy as many items as possible either by the artist or label directly. this is often cheaper than in any other store.
but i'm happy to have a quite good record store in town, monoton in nuremberg, germany. one or the other of these guys has some interest in neo-classical and ambient stuff, so i can find some stuff there too, or at least they order it for a fair price in a good time. apart from that, they've a good indie and singer/songwriter collection and some electronic gems. i'd say apart from the lacking of postrock they meet my taste perfectly.

there was a successor being showed at the namm. http://www.bossus.com/gear/productdetails.php?ProductId=1160&ParentId=251

the trend to use lightened rubber buttons discomforts me.

latest in:
- marcus fisher - monocoastal
- murralin lane - our house is on the wall
the january sale was so tempting! it might happen that 12k will be the dominating label in my cd collection soon. nothing wrong with this if i enjoy all releases so much
also bought recently:
- aidan baker - scalpel
awesome.
- blue skied an' clear, a morr music compilation
ambivalent, but not expensive, though.

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: DSI Tempest

haha... not so sure. feels a bit like my father would try to sell me a drummachine  ;D

if your father would be the father of all cool drum machines (which implies that all cool drum machines would be your brothers and sisters - weird!), i wouldn't bother if he tried to sell me one.  ;D

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: New Eventide!...
« on: January 14, 2011, 04:02:01 am »
just had the idea to post this but you've been faster.

awesome this is! i had the impression that quite some people have been waiting for eventide to release their reverb algorithms in pedal formfactor (not only me).
for me this will be the first reverb-effect; i don't own any other dedicated reverb yet.

I tried to get the fireworks on new year's eve, but darn, it's hard to get good pictures from fireworks!
this is the best shot i managed to do:

yes, player of games...

don't know on the gibson yet... only 4 pages in!

Spook Country did not let me go, it was like reading everytime until no page was left. Great book! The latest Gibson is waiting here, Zero History. But I'm still busy with Neal Stephensons Barock Cycle, and I'd rather re-read Pattern Recognition and Spook Country before starting the last part of Gibsons trilogy.

S - I'm not as good as you (own records)
i had the strong desire for a bedroom+girl+guitar+8track album. this one fits. plus it's mastered by taylor. (the last bedroom+girl+guitar album i bought some time ago was mixed & mastered flat and boring. such a waste of good songs!)
