Always make sure to record a signal you are happy with

I agree on that.

i like to record my sources in mono as much as possible. makes for better stereo imaging and clarity when mixing everything in the end. of particular difficulty is today's modern synthesizer, hardware or soft. the presets for these things tend to be drenched in so many effects so they sound good by themselves and this is usually not a good thing for a mix.

i'll only record a synthesizer in stereo if the effects or some other attribute really NEEDS to be in stereo. as well, one or two stereo sources on top of a bunch of mono elements can be a good thing of course...

but just watch the piling up of stereo sources. tends to get muddy real fast.

what about external audio effects. Do you also record only the left output of the wet signal? or you use left and right signal in different channels ?

I agree on mono and yes, stereo sources tends to get muddy.
Most of the times all my sources are in mono and then i would just create the stereo effect.
Most often i use delays panned to the opposite direction from my original sources (of course with a great care in volumes to preserve the balance) and slightly different EQs.
Also in some mixes i like to fill the harmonic gaps by using synthesizers or "ambient" sounds made mostly with guitars (like Phil Spector did in Wall of Sound but with strings)

Great thread!!!

And if you work with sh*tty material to begin with, the question doesn't even come into play.  ;)

Of course! Garbage in, garbage out...

Actually I'm happy with the DAWs I use at the moment I just think that every DAW can introduce new possibilities to the user.

all DAWs sound the same... it's how you mix that will impart differences.

unless you're talking about bundled plug-in quality

don't know about that...maybe this is debatable 'cause every DAW is using different algorithms and when it comes in native plugins there is a difference for sure.

with DAWs my golden rule is "if it helps you be creative, I don't care what the name of the app is."  Logic has just really worked for me.

i totally agree with you but the problem is when you are free-lance mixing engineer and every studio is working with pro tools and cubase and suddenly you find yourself in a completely new environment.

Which one do you prefer...considering the sound quality.

I am thinking to change from Ableton /Logic to Ableton/Cubase (or Pro Tools). So, any help based on personal experience would be much appreciated.

yep, Ableton live has a good MIDI editor for certain things (for example you can not write scores in it), it's really easy to use and there are lots of stuff if you want to dive deep.

Also from what i hear Cubase has a really good MIDI editor but i rarely use Cubase.
Personally, when it comes to MIDI, i like to use Logic.

That would be really interesting because in every documentary i watched George Martin had a minor role and i am pretty sure that he can share some awesome information about the recording technics and the overall process from that era.

Next i am gonna watch Alan Parsons "Art & Science of Sound" ( http://artandscienceofsound.com/ ). The DVDs are a little expensive but i guess you have to pay something when you want to learn from the best.

George Harrison: Living in the material world

excellent documentary about George Harrison, my favorite of the Beatles. But What i really want to see is a documentary about George Martin, the producer, arranger and partly engineer of the Beatles. He did some amazing stuff back then, truly a pioneer.

If you like that kind of material you might (if you don't already know them) dig The Bad Plus.

oh, thank you Sam, i didn't know about them! Great song indeed!!! Also liked the "comfortably numb" cover.
