THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / It's only fair...
« on: June 30, 2011, 07:37:35 pm »
A few discussions I've had lately (some with members of this forum as well) made me consider labels under a new light. Especially when speaking of smaller independent ventures, labels have almost become philanthropist or charitable entities, operating with bare minimums and promoting artists who cannot make ends meet, taking considerable risks with every new release to do so.

It's probably not that grim, or that black and white, but I'm just trying to paint a portrait here. It seems that no matter how much advertising is done to make the consumer aware that downloading illegally hits the people who produce the things they like straight in the gutt, there is an ease on the part of the user to just go ahead and not feel guilty anyway, everybody does it / etc. all kinds of justifications are worthwhile really.

So, I'm wondering if we're not at the point where 'fair trade' becomes applicable to music production. What say you?

OTHER MUSIC / You are the proud owner of a turntable
« on: May 11, 2011, 06:24:43 pm »
As such, you can help me out.

If you're the 'help a brother out' kind of person, I would like you to drop the needle on any vinyl of your choosing, record anywhere from 11 to 33 seconds and send the result to lebergermusic (a) gmail dot com. (please keep the sound of the needle as it 'makes contact') and the name to which you'd like thanks / cheers / props to go to, or not, as you wish.

It is for an EP project, still embryonic at this time. No deadline, no rush.

I can work with any format, but would prefer WAV @ 24 bits.

Thanks in advance!

COMPUTER MUSIC / lightweight software for the travelling man
« on: April 25, 2011, 10:09:05 am »
I'm leaving home for work for the week, and I'll be on a laptop running Windows 7.
The usual software on my desktop isn't compatible with that, and the laptop is not my computer either.

Do you guys know of any fun apps, lightweight and so on? Preferably free as this is not my main computer and I will delete the apps afterwards. I won't be able to actually record anything, no MIDI controller on hand, etc. so it has to be able to generate sounds of its own or use samples.

OTHER MUSIC / What's your favorite part of the process?
« on: April 23, 2011, 11:10:10 am »
May it be music or any other form of art you dabble in. Not asking about the why and reasons behind it, that could get convoluted. But tangibly, practically, which part of the work do you get your kicks from mostly?

SELF PROMOTION / Le Berger - Expeditions on the Grayscale
« on: March 14, 2011, 10:34:50 pm »

?click?

In this particular order: surfing, sailing, floating, sinking.

Self released digital LP, probably the last of its kind for a good while. Other things calling to my attention and what have you, I hope you like it!

Profit from sales until April 1st will be donated for the relief & reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of the tsunami in Japan, most likely through Red Cross though I haven't made the call yet, all suggestions and informed advice are welcome if you know where best the money can go.

OTHER MUSIC / What to look for in a label?
« on: February 09, 2011, 04:48:23 pm »
Or mostly, what not to look for...

I figure there's a wealth of experience around these boards, probably some horror stories too.

I'm like a child wandering in the middle of a movie with no frame of reference here.
Basically, I'm asking for pointers & the things that should tip the alarm wire, so to speak.

OTHER MUSIC / Guess the sample | a game / quiz / what have you
« on: January 25, 2011, 08:27:33 am »
Allo, I started a webpage (http://samplistic.blogspot.com) as a kind of blend between blog & game. Here's the gist: someone comes up with a creation made with sampling as source material, then everyone and anyone tries to come up and guess the original material that was used.

It doesn't have to be fancy or a complete piece that you would release, anything form a 30 seconds snippet of hip hop beats to a 20 minutes expansive soundscape works out for me.

Everyone is welcomed to join in, either for the guessing or to submit material, even if sampling is not a regular tool you use in your creations per se. The idea is just to have a fun time and scratch our heads during the course of a whatever day, and by the same token, if you submit a creation, you can send me a blurb about who you are / what you do / official website / upcoming projects and so on, it will be featured alongside your guessable sound bite.

To partake in the fun you can click on that link up there or follow from twitter (www.twitter.com/Le_Berger) if that's more convenient for you.

If you want to submit a creation & blurb, send me all the info to le_berger@hotmail.com

Let the games begin!

COMPUTER MUSIC / Anybody worked with the Sonic Couture series?
« on: December 24, 2010, 03:29:16 am »
I've been interested in acquiring a few of their plug ins / VST / what have you, especially the glass work, array mbira, pan drum, bowed piano & balinese gamelan.

here they are for demo & samples: http://www.soniccouture.com/en/products/

Thing is, a few are quite pricey and the greatest disadvantage is those that aren't VST ready who only work with the Kontakt player or Ableton Live, which aren't the platforms I use at the moment.

So, if anybody has worked with them, I'd like to hear your take.

FIELD RECORDING / Sounds of the anatomy
« on: November 11, 2010, 10:21:00 pm »
This is probably the best place to get input about this, I'd like to record specific sounds of the anatomy. And meanwhile ideally I'd insert a microphone by poking holes in someone, I'm not sure about the ethical implications...  :o

Jokes aside, I get the impression a contact microphone is my best bet. Any ideas? Suggestions? make/models/etc. appreciated too.
