Yes agreed, we need  to stay focussed on the music.

It's hard going for the Pro guy that needs the income though.

As much as I appreciate performance based music.  It's not the only approach and sometimes it's just not possible.  I've written a lot of music now that just can't be performed.  Correction! there's no point performing it (unless you really want to see me press enter on a laptop).

e.g. http://soundcloud.com/runningonair/systems-out-of-chance-v1

I'd like to hear someone try to play this!

So I guess it's still not an even playing field after all.

I think most serious music fans are not going to mind shelling out a bit of cash for the music they really like and as for the rest?  If someone downloads something for free but never gets round to listening to it, why should we really care?

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Re: Facebook
« on: May 11, 2011, 10:18:43 am »
I think what's working for me the most, is twitter and soundcloud, plus a website for in depth info.  I just don't have much time to keep the other stuff up to date and I'm not sure it's worth it either.

When I get a chance, I may setup a facebook/myspace page that points to my my site but on the other hand .....

OTHER MUSIC / Re: What's your favorite part of the process?

It's all good except the donkey work!  editing samples I find really dull.  Calculation work for tunings or what ever, can also be a bit of a pain, but the results make up for it in the end.

/ somewhat related article

http://www.littlewhiteearbuds.com/feature/everything-popular-is-wrong-making-it-in-electronic-music-despite-democratization/

After reading that, I'm glad I'm not trying to do dance music or DJ stuff.

I think I've pretty much come to terms with not ever making a living from music.  I'd like more time, but at least I'm not struggling to make ends meet, as I have done in the past.  I'm quite happy to focus on the music, release it when it's ready and if it sells that's bonus.

My French girlfriend was anything BUT forgettable.

But that's a story for another time...
around beers...
far from civilized ears...

Is that the one in your soundcloud profile picture?  ;-)

Very true.  I guess the difference is that if I've bought something I'm going to force myself to listen to it at least once, at some point.

Or maybe not..

What about an "accidentally dropped on a gravel path" transfer?

or a...

"The needle has collected so much dust it's not touching the vinyl any more" transfer? (used to happen to my disks all the time)

;-)

To be honest, you really need to give more detailed information, maybe a diagram.  You need to show all of the device and exactly what is connected to what using what.

Doesn't sound like a power based earth loop, I would expect hum if that were the case.  You could try to isolate earth by using batteries in those devices that take them (just as a test to track down the cause).

I used to have lots of problems like this when I used hardware.  It's a real pain.

I guess the point would be that you want the medium i.e. vinyl, to play a part in the final sound of the track.  Having said that you probably wouldn't want to release on mp3  at all if that were the case.  Although it depends if you believe in the use of "democratic technologies"?  As popular as vinyl is, it's a niche market (as CDs are becoming).  You might say that you only want the work to be heard on vinyl but you then exclude a large part of your potential audience.  The compromise would be that you release an mp3 of the vinyl.

Just on of my random thoughts.  :-)

Xela - Dead Sea - Very inventive and really captures the "folklore" of the sea, almost sounds like a ghostbox release.

cooledit that's about 12 years old.
I have a beaten up classical guitar that I was given in the 80s.
I also have a few old digital format machines DAT and DCC they're about 17 years old now.

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Release on Vinyl and MP3 ONLY?
« on: March 18, 2011, 11:23:16 am »
Actually this applies to tape and MP3 as well.

If you were releasing something on Vinyl and MP3 ONLY, would you record off the Vinyl to create the MP3?  Could be stupid question but I'm curious if anyone has done that or would consider doing it?

I'm curious where you might be able to get a short run of 12", say 100.  For reasonable price?  What sort of you price would you expect to pay?

It's interesting given the limitations of the format, that it still so popular.   :)
