few things I've been really enjoying this past month...

Jan Jelinek - Jazz loop finding records - classic - never far from my turntable.
Cupp Cave - Retina Waves - really really nice release, sounds like a lot of things but nothing else at the same time
Pye Corner Audio - Black mill tapes - Pretty much exactly what I thought it'd sound like. not a bad thing at all.
Broadcast - black session (Paris 5/4/2000) - mind blowing live recording.
Sand Circles - motor city - nice lofi haziness. similar to andy stott but more... optimistic?
Erkin Koray - Erkin Koray 45's (1967 - 76) - awesome turkish psych rock
Didier Bocquet - Sequences - early 80's proggy synthness
Paco Sala - Ro me ro - nice digitalis ambi-pop(?) that for some reason, tonally reminds me of slow dive's souvlaki space station...

Gave the new beach house record a try - terrible snoozefest. not a single redeeming track. Such a shame. their first two records are exceptional

Wow, it really does look like the 12k logo.
Worth getting just to throw a decal on it and hang it on a wall  8)

I picked up a pair of a5's earlier this year and never looked back.
I know they lack a little of the low end definition (below 60/70hz) but for $500US in total including shipping to Australia... hard to beat.

Glad it worked out,
Nothing worse than bad noise (as opposed to good noise ;))

I remember having to run every sound we had through a dc offset to get rid of the inherent noise we had in our early set up!

I think it's cool. I'm all for artefacts in sound. even if the fidelity doesn't match and especially if the intended format is vinyl...

I guess you just need to find someone with one of those batshit crazy amazing vinyl hifi systems to do the transfer justice.

I agree, Grounding problems are always a hum as opposed to a noise, generally

I had a heap of ground loop issues when I first started setting up to make music, now I'm a real stickler for checking everything at every point to make sure I don't run into that problem again,

Try isolating things if you can, like if you can run the cv converter via usb power, run everything off your macs battery and see if the sound still persists, if it does, it aint a ground loop and you have bigger issues...

Also try plugging your whole setup into one powerboard and then plug that into different outlets throughout your house or a friends house to test. I once lived in a house that only had grounding issues in the room I chose to setup in.

But yeah. my guess is bad m-audio gear.
If it is a ground loop I'd actually hazard a guess it's your synths power supply, probably some badly wired 9v or 12v powerpack... :-\

FIELD RECORDING / Re: olympus tresmic

I think the main difference is it lacks dedicated volume and recording level dials which, any recorder without them is a pain in the ass.

That aside, does look pretty cool

Thanks for that philippe, some great posts/threads on that board, very helpful.

Could I ask why you went for the PCM-10 over the PCM-50, was it simply an issue of price? More I read, more I'm tending towards the PCM-50 but my budget can stretch that far so price isn't *too* much of an issue.

I'm curious on this too, aren't the built in mics on the pcm-10 omni directional? I really want to grab the pcm-50 and play around with the (albeit limited) mic positioning... unfortunately my budget is a bit more of an issue, AU prices are way higher than US despite our dollar being at parity for ages now... unless someone wants to be my US address, unbox a recorder, wrap it in a crap load of bubble wrap and send it in a smaller package ;)

Group buy anyone?

If you can hold out, may be a good idea to wait till musikmesse in april. could be some new gear coming out. Most of the competitors on the market have been out since 2008/2009...

the cure - faith

my most favorite The Cure album.
they never sounded that dark and desperate again. Especially All Cats Are Grey and The Funeral Party are still absolutely amazing.

Wish is my favourite, especially from the edge of a deep green sea. Brings out the jaguar wha guitar angst in me ;)

Hey all,
If you're in Australia, or are competent at breaking geo locks, A film I did the soundtrack for is screening next week on ABC Television 10:05pm Tuesday, February 15 2011 and online after that for 1 week or so...

Pretty proud of this work, and the visuals are amazing as well, so if you can, tune in!

Just received my 'Static Place' in the mail,

Truly beautiful release, Would love this on vinyl, especially vinyl covered in dust with a few scratches on it played a little slower with a slightly slipping platter going in and out of time... just sayin ;)

everything is better pitched down

I've recently been experimenting with pitching up too, just to buck the trend, on average sounds terrible unless you take something that had a ridiculously low pitch to begin with... like the low hum my oven makes  ::)
