STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: mixing tips
« on: February 07, 2012, 04:44:40 am »
Yep, I learnt to record in mono the hard way.

Another topic:

I feel that eq-ing in software is quite "dangerous", so if you record your audio material, just remember: "shit in, shit out".

Always make sure to record a signal you are happy with and in case eq-ing is necessary, remove, do not push them. That being said: feel free to ignore this, it might yield resulting results... <- this is true for mostly any mixing "rule".

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Travel guitars

These look scary. My friend Takeshi Nishimoto also has one of these guitars you can disassemble but I could never bring myself to play one of these. I guess I am super conservative and snobby when it comes to guitars. I do not care much about amps/effects, etc. but ... damn these all look so unbelievable ugly. Sorry, I am aware that I am not adding anything constructive to this thread but I am just really upset about this. ;) :(

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Any good reverb effects pedals
« on: December 05, 2011, 04:39:45 pm »
The el capistan is one of my favourite pedals for sure. And its spring reverb (one of the secondary function) is pretty nice, too.
My favourite reverb at the moment is the alesis wedge. Some people hate it. It is a bit easier to tweak than the rack effects. If I had the money I'd buy the blue sky reverb for sure. One of my friends loves the RV-3 boss but it is also rather early/digital and prices are insane...

I guess it is a question of taste as always. To me the spring reverb on the cathedral sounds a bit overdrawn but it depends on how much wet signal you want. Maybe the holy grail would do a good job then. The blue sky seems to be awesome. I have a nasty cheap recommendation that I might get banned for: look for some early 90s rack stuff instead (lexicon, Yamaha, korg, Alesis). Yup, if you are also into shoegaze tones they seem to be the ticket.

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Modular synthesis
« on: August 09, 2011, 03:28:16 am »
I sold my kraftzwerg last year for financial reasons and do not really miss it that much, except for serious "lowendness"...

At the moment I would rather (have to) buy a new computer than spending cash on modules but still I wonder what are people doing with modules as an effect. What are typical uses?

I was really tempted to get that matrix in a small suitcase and use it with guitar pedals...

Would that make sense?

Or on a related note: Does anyone know a really small mixer (3-4 channels would be "plenty") with more than 2 send channels?
