SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: vintage organs/string machines
« on: January 13, 2010, 09:07:49 am »
hi pug

i know it's the not the real thing, but there are a number of nice plug in synths that emulate the string synths of past. advantages would be price and portability.

disadvantages would be that it's a stinkin' plug in.

glad there's some love out there.

fyi, the CRWTH cd will come with a coupon for a free download of the 17 track bonus release. otherwise, for those not buying the CD, both CRWTH and the bonus album will be available for purchase via iTunes, etc.

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: Traveling tips?
« on: January 12, 2010, 03:55:33 pm »
i've brought my acoustic guitar in a soft case on flights 3 or 4 times.. to places like japan, canada and within the US. i didn't have a hard case, nor did i want to check it.. i think i lucked out in all scenarios because the flight attendants found room for it up front in the coat/wardrobe closet.

on the flight back from japan the attendants actually put it in their little bedroom area 'cos there was no other area.

i think if you just show up at the gate with a soft case, and be friendly, they'll do their best to accomodate you. perhaps the worst case would be they check it with the baby strollers before you get on.. which may be a bit safer.

ART / Re: machinefabriek: take a closer listen

it's an interesting observation, rutger..

my first thought would be.... oh, people like sounds that are muffled and distant because they don't WANT sound..... but, it probably has more to do with the idea of taking every day sounds and changing them some way to create something perhaps more nostalgic or removed from reality.

Nice to see this topic! Thanks!
It seems that alot of favorite sounds are muffled, distant, in another room, etc... kinda ironic, isn't it? ;-)

p.s. there are plenty of copies of the book left...

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: mixing with your eyes closed
« on: January 10, 2010, 12:33:19 pm »
yup... that's it, billy.. you watch those changes come and it takes away the mystery that the end listener will experience.

i just set up my hot corner for screen darkening. the nice thing is, i can continue to adjust levels because i've got the mackie controls hooked up. so it's like mixing in the old days w/o screens...
