yeah, chaining with other modules.. i'll try the ones mentioned.. thanks..!

i guess what i was after though was not only a pitch shift, but a time shift as well. like hardware loopers often do... like a sampler does... pitch it down an octave and it's half as slow.

thats' where the fun begins :)

i'm still on 6.... sort of put off by the upgrade price... as a user since version 1... these upgrade prices get pretty insane... but it does look pretty good.... it's down on the list somewhere..

12K + LINE / Re: NEW 12K SHOP LAUNCHED TODAY + SALE
« on: April 21, 2012, 08:59:51 am »
thanks everyone... the shop launch has been just fantastic... and people are really enjoying the multiple-format download options. we considered charging $1 more for FLAC or other lossless versions, in fact, we had it that way on an earlier beta of the shop, but at the end of the day, why charge more to listeners who want better audio quality!?! (it should be the other way around! charge more for worse-quality audio).

though, we do get charged by the megabyte for downloads.. so we get charged more for higher resolution files. that's why people typically charge more for them.. because it costs more to sell.

i'm really happy to see people exploring the older releases. there's a lot of great stuff from the past years that sounds as captivating now as they did then.

12K + LINE / NEW 12K SHOP LAUNCHED TODAY + SALE
« on: April 17, 2012, 08:28:45 am »
here's the info copied from our latest newsletter, we're also running a half price sale on downloads and a free shipping sale on 12k CDs...:

We are very happy to announce, after many months of work, false starts, botched technology and patient beta-testers, that we have launched the new 12k online shop. We'll run down the new features below. Additionally, we're offering the entire 12k download catalog for 50% off  as well as offering free shipping on all 12k CDs for the remainder of the month of April.

• GETTING THERE: The new shop can be found at shop.12k.com and also from within the 12k.com website. One of our favorite new features is that every release on our website now links to an individual shop page where you can select your format and check out. This allows us (and you) to pass around direct shop URLs for specific releases. It's a simple feature that goes a long way to making the shop more user friendly. You will also notice a significant increase in site speed due to new hosting servers.

• DOWNLOADS: This is where it gets a bit more exciting. In addition to the physical releases we've always sold we now offer 12k releases as downloads. There are two particular items of note here: 1. Many different formats are offered, from MP3, to AAC, FLAC, and more. 2. When you purchase a physical 12k release you will receive a free instant download of that item so you can listen to it while you wait for the cd or vinyl to arrive in the mail. Please note, however, that at this time we only offer downloadable content for 12k releases, we're not set up to handle the digital distribution of other labels.

When you're ready to purchase an item you simply select what format you want from the dropdown menu and add it to your cart. Physical releases automatically include a digital counterpart and you will choose what file type you want to download after you check out.

• CATEGORIES + SEARCHES: You will now find a drop-down menu for the various categories and product-types in the 12k shop. The above picture shows how it works. Also, because our catalog of products and additional label releases is growing rather large you can simply search for an item you're looking for in the search field.

• PRICES: We now work on a system that offers actual shipping prices on items. You will notice the initial price for CDs and vinyl is a bit lower than you're used to, but please note that shipping charges will get added when you check out. You will see a savings though when  multiple items are ordered because a more accurate by-weight shipping total is calculated. in a nutshell: savings for our customers.

• COMING SOON: The cart and delivery system we're using to run the 12k shop is going to be rolling out coupon code functionality in the near future. This is a very important feature for us and we'll be putting it to good use to offer our loyal listeners special discounts. Additionally, as new features roll out with the system we'll be implementing the interesting ones and improving functionality.

We're quite confident the new shop will provide you a better user experience all around. If you run into any problems or have questions while you're using it please don't hesitate to contact us at info@12k.com

yeah, i think i saw this on the New York Times today:

"To an unusual degree, Jobs the 2880 was responsible for Apple's 12k's success. He It was described as a control freak and was known to have rejected hundreds of ideas in the quest for his it's idea of perfection....."

STUDIO + RECORDING TECHNIQUES / Re: small portable mixing desk

might be hard to find RCA inputs.. unless you get some sort of "DJ" marketed board... XLR won't be a problem for mic inputs...

mackie's probably your best bet in this category.. hard to beat for their prices.. while it's not "high end" by any means, there simply isn't much better quality in this format.

maybe a small soundcraft

but it's 8 channel minimum i think

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Nord Modular/Modular G2
« on: April 04, 2012, 02:40:26 pm »
ok, i have to jump on the 92 + 93 bandwagon here... beautiful.. 92 is quite the beauty... there's a patch i used a few times, that was a tweaked version of someone else's.. that's sort of similar.. but yours is much more controlled and gentle...

i continue to be inspired by your postings and NEED to make time to dig into the modular every day.. (or every other day)... i can't imagine how much you've learned since january 1st!

yeah, in theory it's cool, but i'm not sure in practice it would be that enjoyable for an audience to listen to.

I'm thinking a similar thing could be done with gear, where you have let's say an afternoon to experiment with the gear of another (and their counsel if need be) and perform with it the same night.

A friend of mine was attempting to put on an event with this in mind, and I was very interested in taking part, although he found it very difficult to find others who wanted to be involved, all worried they would sound bad or embarrass themselves.

I still think it is a good idea, and agree it would be a bit stressful and scary but also agree that is part of the fun too.

It both opens up a great deal for both the performer in finding new ways to work, and the owner in hearing their own equipment used away from their own methods.

It is a really good point and think it should be done.

over the years in my various collaborative projects.. when they happen in my studio (as opposed to via email) one of the nicest things is watching other artists use my equipment.... because we fall into such patterns with our gear. we find comfort zones and ways to work with them... then someone else comes in, looks at it in a totally different way, and produces something you would have never thought of.

it's one of the most rewarding aspects of collaborating for me... so much of a learning experience, and new inspirations.

It brings up something I thought of recently, kind of like the 'birds in a box' by Stephen Vitiello & Machinefabriek, where they gathered heteroclit items in a box for the other artist to discover right at the moment of performance. I'm thinking a similar thing could be done with gear, where you have let's say an afternoon to experiment with the gear of another (and their counsel if need be) and perform with it the same night. It's bound to be a bit stressful and scary, but at the same time how challenging, fun and impromptu.

I know I'd like to try it anyway.

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Re: Promotional Work
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:23:24 pm »
i think some of it may be to please the labels... but, also, the particular writer may not know something is sold out.

also, for what it's worth, the review can still be quite relevant for the bulk of the music buying public (ie: the iTunes shoppers)
