SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Waldorf Blofeld
« on: June 11, 2012, 09:15:19 pm »
the blofeld was great live. i just hooked up a keyboard controller to it and played tones live. it provided a much nicer soundbed than the synths i had going in the OP-1. both together we're nice. the blofeld will be a mainstay in my live rig probably now.

every time i turn that little guy on i'm impressed at the sounds i make with it. i only wish there was one with a knob-ridden interface. give me the blofeld with a Nord interface please....

the cover on discogs is a pre-production cover i sent around to distributors.. before we knew the exact time of the album.

no.. there's not different versions...

well well.... imagine this...... after many many months... i got my Blofeld SL option working!

i just decided to re-load the SL activation and then re-load the preset sample files from waldorf... and it works! i now have 60 megabytes of lame pianos and clav sounds!

the Blofeld now may take on an even bigger role for me live.. loading in long textures and sounds from albums.. could be pretty cool...

excited that this works now! satiates my lust for the Nord Wave by a day or two...

the mfb stuff is cool and small... but completely different from an OP-1. these are analog mono synths (mono? or are they poly?) with knobs... OP-1 is digital and polyphonic with sampling, multiple synthesizers, drum machines, etc. a "mini workstation" really. really depends what you're looking for.

i was about to sell my waldorf Blofeld until i used it in a live show with sakamoto. the size is great for live and will probably accompany me to my shows now. it's redundant in my studio but fills a gap live since i don't use a laptop.

the book edition will run out when the CDs do... so, no immediate rush/worry for you!

Simon Scott "Below Sea Level" was released this week... sorry for the late post here.. but most of you probably knew of the release date already. it's been really busy getting books ordered and we had a bit of delay with Simon's sketches getting to 12k.. (he's in the process of making more, too)..

feedback has been great so far (thanks @haesslich.... glad you're enjoying it!)

i agree with most of the above... mostly that they synth engines do not sound as rich or deep as most other synthesizers.. but i use it mostly for sinewaves (which DO sound good.. they're just sinewaves after all).. noise and samples/field recordings.

rené... the "live looping" you're wondering about can pretty much be handled by the 4-track tape. it's quite like a 2880.. in that you have 4 tracks with volume and panning... you can record any of the synth or drum engines into it.. or external signals.

there's a lot of power in the quirky little device and there is a lot of undocumented features/functions that you have to learn by word of mouth sort of.

i'm not sure it's worth the full price.. but if you can get one used for a bit of a discount and if it fills a gap in your gear.. it could be well worth it.

hi rené... i bought mine primarily for live performances and messing around when i travel... and i use it exactly like that.. every time... so i can say i don't use it any more or less than i originally intended.

some loops that i've made with it while sitting outside have made it onto my new album, so i guess in that sense you can say i'm also using it in my recordings/studio... but for me it's primarily a live device and something to come up with ideas when i'm not in my studio.

i find the synth engines pretty limiting for creating the kinds of sounds i like to create, but fortunately with the ability to sample it puts little restrictions on your sound palette.

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Nord Modular/Modular G2
« on: May 16, 2012, 09:20:13 pm »
regarding my nord modular uses..

yes... mine and frank's "balance" was probably 75% nord modular.... as for Polr..there was actually no nord modular in there. a lot of that was Doepfer A100 analog modular and software generated sounds (i used a program called Soundmaker back then)....

thanks for the kind words about "polr".. i haven't listened to it in 10 years... but i skimmed through it just now to confirm that that was all pre-nord/doepfer period stuff for me. it was also non-DAW... way back in like 97 when carsten nicolai and frank were at my house in brooklyn (the first time we met) we realized we both used this Sound Maker program to make sounds... but carsten had taken it a step further and actually composed with it (because it let you open multiple sounds, loop them, and play/stop them independantly).. so it was basically like a multitrack looper but with no realtime control except start and stop!... i adopted what he taught me to create "polr"... it was just starting and stopping loops. very very basic. sort of right before the big DAW explosion.

i had a nice-sized doepfer modular back then... but was sort of frustrated by its limitations... i sold it for the express purpose of buying my nord modular.

richard chartier doesn't use any hardware... (except some very very old recordings when he used to have a dx100).. so, no nord modular for him, either!

email me if you don't see it by the end of the week. perhaps lost, though that's rare... usually in this case they're just really delayed. but, email me at the end of the week if you haven't seen it.

this looks interesting, and not only because the device looks like an elongated 12k logo....

lost in the mail? from us, or from a different shop?

Gareth Dickson's recording blew my mind.

If only the cd would finally arrive...

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: NORD G2X

yes, his sounds have inspired me to spend much, much more time with mine.

part of me wishes i could sell all of my equipment and keep only that. but... i'm much too much of a gear addict to do that!

the G2x is basically the same as the G2 except more keys, i think another pitch bender... and probably more DSP or slots (not sure on this)

yes, it's a great machine.... and physically very nice.

if you listen to some of Moize's G1 sounds

http://www.12k.com/forum/index.php?topic=880.0

you'll get an idea of what it sounds like. the 1st nord modular and the G2 sound a little bit different from each other, but not so much. same idea, mostly.
