COMPUTER MUSIC / Re: free plug-ins
« on: July 31, 2012, 11:23:22 am »
for me it really depends on the situation. if i am creating with my pedal setup.. well, that's mostly hardware. also, with other studio situations, mostly making sounds or recording with my hardware synths, i'll usually turn to my Eventide hardware units.

but, when sitting down composing and editing songs at the computer i'll put out plug ins on sounds that are already recorded.

best of both worlds, i suppose!

Do you guys use more analogue or hardware effects?

even though mac touched on this.. i'm just going to +1 his reply.... what he said is all very very important...

the best thing you can do is rid yourself of those VSTs. if you're having trouble writing music, adding MORE isn't going to help...

do what mac said... file it all away and start with very little. you will be more creative that way.

i have a "tons" plugins-effects-vsti... and i can not make anything interesting, at least it sounds ok. I have an incredible inner need to express myself through music. result (mostly at the end is frustration. :(

how much time you need for only one track?

do you processing every instrument?

FIELD RECORDING / Re: Recording with the iPhone
« on: July 17, 2012, 08:26:22 pm »
reviving this old post... now that i'm a happy owner of the FiRe app.. and a tascam iM2.... i'm really liking FiRe.. the waveform drawing is super helpful.. and, it looks like they've updated the soundcloud export thing to include being able to grab tracks via a web browser when the iPhone is on your network.

the iM2 seems to work nicely as well.

i wish i had this setup when i was doing my One Sound Each Day project 3 years ago. the ability to take photographs and notes right along with your recordings is very cool..and the iPhone's interface makes naming your recordings way handier than on other dedicated recording devices. just seems like a great app all around..

12K + LINE / Re: 12K PACKAGING CHANGE
« on: July 09, 2012, 07:17:09 pm »
i'm not sure yet. i'm trying to find suitable sleeves. i like those soft papery ones that are used in a lot of japanese releases, but they tend to bunch up. i'm still researching. the idea is to use a nice sleeve.

Sounds great. :] I have one more question which is very important for me as a CD collector. Is CD is going to be in additional sleeve or simply inserted into the packaging without any protection?

hi arek

i'm not really keeping it a secret or anything.. not trying to "hype" it up too much...

the packaging is really quite similar.. i'm basically going to do a gatefold jacket.. much like a digipack.. but just with a pocket for the disc instead of a plastic tray. anyone familiar with like, the very early 12k cds... 12k1007, 12k1008... or, really many other packaging around... will be familiar with it. this design has a spine, which is important to me.. so you will be able to see artist/title when it is on your cd shelf.

however, i am custom creating the die for the jacket because i want the spine to be 1mm thinner than the default spine. what this does is prevent the package from pinching and feeling fatter on the spine side, and thinner on the other side. i'm also using a heavy stock to make it all feel quite nice.

the only thing i haven't decided is whether to go with an uncoated paper stock or stick with a matte varnish like on the current digipacks.

the uncoated stock seems more "12k" these days. softer, more organic... but from a printing point of view, the glossy stock with matte varnish is crisper and holds thing lines better.

i don't have much more time to decide.. but, i'm leaning towards uncoated stock.

just like most of the recent 12k cds in sleeves.. like MOSS, TASOGARE, VITIELLO + BERG... these are all uncoated.

the design is remaining relatively similar.. i went through a few re-designs and kept coming back to a version of the current design... which makes me think i stumbled across something so perfect for 12k that i can't see changing it.

one benefit, however, is that because the disc itself wont' be visible when you open the package... it will be in a pocket, i have one more panel on the inside for art. instead of just doing it a solid color, i think i will put a 2nd photograph there.

i played with the idea of putting all of the back side text.. song titles, and such.. on the inside.. and having only photo on the outside.. but then when people see the discs in the store they won't really know how many songs are on it, or what's on it or anything...

but wrapping an image from front to back would be nice.. (i don't like text on top of image... from a templated point of view if something isn't going to work 100% of the time, i won't do it)

ACOUSTIC ELECTRIC / Re: 2880 discontinued...
« on: July 05, 2012, 06:42:07 pm »
you can use the whole card for a single session... because.. well, there are no separate sessions.. there's no memory banks.. nothing to switch to... the card basically holds 5 pieces of data... loop 1-4 and the mixdown loop (if i recall correctly)

you can't store multiple 4-track sessions on the 2880 ... it's all just one

i've never come close to maxing out the time.. as most of my stuff is 10-20 second loops at the most

SYNTHESIZERS + SOUND-MAKING HARDWARE / Re: Nord Modular/Modular G2
« on: July 05, 2012, 06:38:35 pm »
thanks, martin! i had a look at that schematic that you linked to on your last post.. it made a lot of sense... very interesting!

curious.. have you gotten into the logic modules much yet? that's one area of the NM that is quite intimidating. most of my sounds are oscillators, filters, randomizers, etc.. the more easy-to-grasp stuff......

wow, you're getting scary good at this nord modular thing. i had a 606 for many years and know the sound well. you came extremely close.. especially that open high hat!... probably as part of a full song you'd hardly be able to tell the difference.

i only wish you had a G2 so i could see how you do these things!

ART / Re: 12K Artist Recipes: The 12k Kitchen!
« on: July 02, 2012, 10:09:42 am »
oh yeah.. i've got here the Official 12k Juice recipe... there's even a story behind it.

a few years ago when i went to australia i landed in brisbane and met lawrence english for the first time. he picked me up at the airport and then had to drop me off in some small section of town for a couple hours while he had to deal with a real estate sale/buy or something like that with his wife. so, here i was, fresh off a 22 hour flight in a town i've never been to, wandering around residential streets. on the strip of stores was a juice bar... being tired and hungry i thought a nice fresh juice would do me some good. i ordered one and it was the greatest thing i had ever tasted and will never forget the moment! i've been making it at home ever since. it's really quite simple:

green apple / celery / ginger / lime

in a juicer, combine:

2 green apples
3 stalks of celery
a few pieces of fresh ginger
the juice of one lime

it works on so many different levels. refreshing, invigorating, sweet.

of course, the above amounts can totally be changed around. each fruit plays a bit of a role. the apple provides sweetness (though, the green apple (called "granny smith" here in the states) is really the best because it's tartness works well with the lime)... the ginger provides a bite.. the lime your sourness and the celery a subtle freshness.

you can't go wrong with any combination of the above.

it has since become the official 12k juice drink for all the right reasons!

awesome simon, great thread.

myself, i love cooking. i'm the cook of the house and to me cooking, brewing, cocktail making... so many similarities to making music.

i'll post some recipes here in the near future.. right now i'm off to get some shrimp for some spanish shrimp croquettes with smoked paprika and apple aioli.

yum :)

THE FUTURE OF THE MUSIC BUSINESS / Re: Promotional Work
« on: June 26, 2012, 10:00:04 am »
one quick reply... off the top of my head.... is that there are SO MANY labels out there, and new ones popping up all the time.... that's it's simply way too difficult for reviewers to pay attention to everything. and new labels often have to go through a long period of "proving themselves" before they are respected. 12k has been around for almost 15 years but there are still many indie and experimental music magazines who don't pay much attention. perhaps reviewers want to see how serious the label is... if they are around for the long haul... before committing their resources.

it's a bit of a catch-22.. yes... because how are small labels supposed to advance without press coverage... yet the press isn't willing to help them ....

if you can solve this, you have solved a mystery every label is still trying to figure out.

it's just important to remember that there are THOUSANDS of artists like you and me out there fighting for the attention of listeners and reviewers. i can say, personally, i ignore the people who won't pay attention to 12k and just keep doing my thing as quietly and passionately as possible and hope that over time the label makes a mark somehow.

motion "pictures" is fabulous. years ago i was playing with richard chartier in the UK... we walked into a small bookstore that happened to have some CDs at the front counter... this Motion CD was there. i had no idea who it was or what it sounded like, but back then the sparse packaging was a sure sign it might be good. i bought it and loved it and then spent the next year or two trying to track down who Motion was.... which eventually lead to his 12k releases.

i've actually been thinking about re-releasing "pictures" on 12k to get a bit more exposure for it.
